Stage 1 - Practitioner Programme

First year Sport & Exercise Science Student, Jessica Dixon-Walker shares her motivation for applying to the programme, what she has learnt, and gives advice for potential applicants.

What motivated you to apply for the Practitioner Programme?

When the programme was put forward to the cohort I saw it as a great opportunity to grow my understanding on the realities and the key skills that are needed to become a successful practitioner. I new the programme wasn't something I would want to miss out on!

What has been one of the biggest takeaways/ learning points from the practitioner programme?

Throughout the programme I noted down any learning points I knew would help me personally. One big takeaway was the importance of work experience needed to help increase my understanding within the Practitioner field in real life situations. The speakers advice enlighten me on how to approach other practitioners professionally to help grow my network and open doors to opportunities in the future. 

What are your career aspirations, and how might this programme have helped you on that journey?

I aspire to be a Exercise Physiologist in an elite sports team. The programme has most helped me on the journey to get there by encouraging me to get myself out there and increase my network professionally so that I can reach out to as many relevant opportunities and grow my experience. In addition understanding that it's important that a exercise physiologist can be flexible and know about other roles when applying for job roles , one example being strength and conditioning. 

What advice would you give to a student considering applying for this programme?

Anyone thinking of applying for the programme should definitely go for it! It is an opportunity not to be missed and the skills and knowledge you gain coming out of the programme are so valuable to help direct your future.
