Coaching is an integral component of the Loughborough Sport and we offer a broad range of opportunities in a number of programmes.

Coaching is an integral component of Loughborough Sport, without our volunteer coaches Loughborough Sport would simply not run. Whether you are taking your first steps into coaching or want to expand on your prior experiences, the Coach & Volunteer Academy can help!

We offer a broad range of opportunities in a number of programmes for our students, including within our Athletic Union, recreational programmes and even support clubs and schools out in the community.

We aim to recruit, train and deploy a high quality workforce, providing the opportunity for students to gain internationally recognised qualifications in a number of different sports and seek to develop individuals to progress along the Coaching pathway.

What We Offer?

The Coach & Volunteer Academy supports all volunteer coaches across any programme within Loughborough Sport and beyond. We offer three unique pathways for our students to gain coaching experience, these are:

Performance & Development

This pathway supports all volunteers who coach within our Athletic Union clubs and Performance Sports programmes. Student coaches can gain experience right across the coaching pathway from supporting development squads to leading 1st teams.

Recreation & Participation

This pathway is a great stepping stone for new or existing coaches to build skills by working as a coach or activator within our competitive, but highly social, hall sport programme (IMS) or our recreational programme (My Lifestyle).

Schools & Community

This pathway provides the opportunity for our students to coach outside of the University, gaining experience in either a school or community club setting. It provides excellent opportunities for those looking to work in any career involving young people, especially those looking at a future in PE teaching!

 Support & Development

Our coaches can access to a number of opportunities to develop throughout their time at Loughborough; including receiving National Governing Body recognised qualifications. Many of our coaching courses are hosted on campus so you do not have to travel far!

All volunteer coaches are required to complete a free DBS check, as well as completing fully funded “Safeguarding and Protecting Children” and “Emergency First Aid” courses before coaching in one of our pathways but we will get this sorted for you.

We also offer a number of sport specific coaching workshops, as well as broader coach development training and masterclasses, with all of these opportunities completely free for any coach who volunteers in one of our programmes.

Over the past couple of years we have offered a range of additional opportunities for development including the Swim Teaching level 1 & 2 qualifications, a number of workshops delivered by experienced and skilled coaches including Judy Murray; Andy and Jamie Murray’s Mum!

“The Coach & Volunteer Academy gave me vital work experience in schools to supplement my Athletic Union and Recreational coaching roles, which combined to give me a well-rounded coaching portfolio. This was valuable work experience as I am now entering a job in teaching. The Coach & Volunteering Academy staff were hugely supportive along the way preparing me well for all the opportunities “

Ralph Woods – Basketball coach
