Canoe and kayaking at Loughborough suits both adrenaline junkies, performance athletes and beginners alike. Canoeing is one of Britain’s most upcoming sports, and with various disciplines available we can offer something for everyone.
Athletic Union Club
We cater for Great Britain team members to those who have never kayaked before, so you don't need any experience to come along. We have regular pool sessions to learn the basics or develop your skills and we compete in both University and National competitions.
One of these competitions is BUCS. We compete three times per year in the BUCS Wild Water Racing, BUCS slalom and BUCS polo. Everyone in the club can compete, and we regularly have freshers placed on the BUCS team.
We organise trips to some of the UK’s best whitewater locations including a freshers trip which usually takes place during October to give new members their first taste of the sport. During the summer, you'll get a chance to come along on a club trip to the likes of France or Italy to experience stunning snow melt rivers.
We have three hours of weekly pool sessions split between general canoe and canoe polo. We also offer weekly general pool/canal sessions, which is where you get the opportunity to learn the basics and work towards your star awards. We always have volunteer coaches in place during these sessions to help you out. Our weekly canoe polo lessons, which are like water polo but in kayaks is open to all students from beginner to experienced.
In addition to these sessions, club members are encouraged to go to the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham on Wednesdays to experience their fantastic white-water course. Here, members get a discount and can learn how to white water raft in a safe environment.
Club members are also provided with all equipment needed, including boat storage if you wish to bring your own boat for sessions.
