Muay Thai & Kickboxing

Muay Thai & Kickboxing at Loughborough has something to offer to everyone; boxer, kickboxer, beginner or advanced. It is a great way to improve your fitness, confidence and to make you a better all-round fighter.

Athletic Union Club

We are student led Muay Thai and Kickboxing club that focuses on technique, sparring, strength, conditioning and fight preparation. We cater to all abilities whether that is pro fighters or people who have never touched boxing gloves. We spar and compete in fights/ fight nights however there is no pressure to spar or compete. We have a large range of experience as a club including members who have fought in Thailand and represented their country in martial arts.

Our main philosophy is to hit pads hard, not each other (unless both parties agree). We train lots but there is no pressure to attend every session that is run. As a beginner joining we will focus on stance, beginner techniques, sparring techniques and fitness. Last year we won many of the beginner categories at nationals for both male and female categories at all weight ranges.

As an intermediate we will focus on sparring techniques, fitness & conditioning, sweeps and more advanced techniques. Last year we took many intermediate kickboxers and progressed them throughout the year to be able to compete in advanced categories at nationals with many winning their fights.

We currently don’t have ‘teams’ or ‘trials’ as we believe everyone should be able to try any sport at any level.  We do, however, have categories. Those being:

  • Beginner (no experience - 4 months experience)
  • Intermediate (5 months experience - 2 years experience)
  • Advanced (3 years experience+)
  • Expert (country representative or fought in Thailand or fought professionally or fought full contact)

If you are unsure of your category we are more than happy to evaluate and place you in a category.  As a beginner or intermediate member you will be able to compete at nationals as fight matches are based completely on skill level. As advanced or expert you will also be able to compete at higher levels at nationals and outside of the club in UK wide competitions as yourself and committee see fit.  All levels will spar each other (if you feel comfortable sparring) as this advances all levels. We hit pads hard, not each other.  We train as one big group as we have a very good social community within the club. If you have any further questions please contact committee.

Training frequency

We train 5 times a week currently. These are as follows:

* Monday (MAC: 20:30-22:30)
* Wednesday (MAC: 16:30-18:30)
* Thursday (MAC: 17:00-19:00)
* Friday (Power-base or MAC: 18:30-20:30)
* Sunday (MAC open mat: 10:00-14:30)

A training schedule will be posted on Sunday night or Monday morning for the week with each session plan and what we will be doing. You can attend none or all sessions per week (providing you have booked on the app). We have members who have never missed a session and members who come to one session a month, its completely up to you.
