Athletics at Loughborough caters for all abilities, whether you're a beginner or an elite athlete


Loughborough Students have had always had great success, and in recent years, students have been part of teams that have competed in U20 European and World Championships, World Para Junior Championships, U23 European Championships, Commonwealth Games, European Championships, World Para Championships, World Championships, the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games.

We have seven employed members of staff who support our Athletics Programme. Those on the athletics perfromance programme receive support through sport science, strength and conditioning and sports medicine. Plus, you are also offered lifestyle support and the opportunity to apply for a Sports Scholarship.

Athletic Union Club

We have won 60 of the last 65 Men’s and Women’s outdoor BUCS Championships and are proud to the best University Athletics club in the country.                                       

With a large coaching team and superb indoor, outdoor and strength training facilities, we offer a wide range of competition opportunities ranging from cross-country leagues to indoor and outdoor competitions which are open to all members. Two high-class competitions are held each summer for all events, LIA and LEAP, which provide an excellent opportunity for you to experience a high-class competition environment.

The Athletics Club caters for a wide range of abilities from club to regional level athletes. We train in event groups throughout the week.

The competitive indoor season usually runs from January to March and the outdoor season usually runs from April all the way to September.

Hall Sport (IMS)

We encourage you to compete in Athletics for your halls of residence in IMS competitions held throughout the year. You compete against other halls, and these competitions are always great fun.

My Lifestyle

Running is also available through the My Lifestyle initiative, where you can give the sport a go and have loads of fun at the same time.  No experience needed! If you’re new to running these sessions will introduce you gradually with a mix of walking, jogging and running to get you up to speed. No one is ‘too slow’ to come along. The session will be fun and inclusive so you can get fit whilst having fun!
