Ben Knight

Stage 1 - Practitioner Programme

First year Sport & Exercise Science Student, Ben shares his motivation for applying to the programme, what he has learnt, and gives advice for potential applicants.

What motivated you to apply for the Practitioner Programme?

I've always aspired to be involved in a sports team at the highest level, if not playing, then supporting the team. I've been exposed to, and learnt about a range of practitioner roles whilst studying here but struggled to network, communicate, and truly understand the role of a practitioner at highest level. The practitioner programme seemed like it provided an opportunity for me to do just that, whilst networking with course mates and developing my skill set.

What has been one of the biggest takeaways/ learning points from the practitioner programme?

For me, the importance of soft-skills can never be overestimated, despite a lot of emphasis being placed on academic quality and qualifications. Ultimately, in a sporting environment when working with people, the soft-skills like communication, listening and being able to connect and support those around you seem very important.

What are your career aspirations, and how might this programme have helped you on that journey?

To provide performance support to the the top athletes/teams. The programme has given me a better understanding of the sporting environment, especially at the top level. I am better informed and educated about the roles available to me, the expectations and responsibilities within those roles, and I think most importantly, equipped me with some of the skills to perform well in those roles.

What advice would you give to a student considering applying for this programme?

To use this as a tool to develop your skill box - there are so many snippets of good information from guest speakers, whether that's experiences, tasks or general advice, use it all. Make the most of the networks and connections you might make through the programme too, both peers and practitioners/academics.
