Tell us a bit about yourself (what you do now, current job, career pathway, interests, background etc.)

I'm an international student from Malaysia, currently living in the UK for the past four years, where I've been able to immerse myself in diverse cultures and academic experiences. In my free time, I'm passionate about photography and filmmaking, often experimenting with different styles and collaborating on projects. Additionally, I'm an avid badminton player and have competed in various tournaments, but my interest in sports also extends to football and Formula 1. My experiences have shaped me into an open-minded, creative individual with a global perspective and a diverse range of passions.

How did you first get involved in volunteering within sport at Loughborough?

My role as badminton MMC was the first time I volunteered within sport at Loughborough. My friends introduced me to the CVA where I then explored in detail. I found that they were looking for a volunteer to take care of the badminton team’s socials and immediately decided to apply as it aligned with my hobbies and interest perfectly.

During your time at Loughborough, what volunteering roles did you get involved with?

During my time as badminton MMC, I have gotten involved with helping to promote the badminton team’s overall awareness which also helps support the recruitment of future students and players for the team. This included posting social content such as photos, Instagram reels and more.

What has your experience volunteering been like whilst at Loughborough?

My experience volunteering has been great. Not only was this a chance for me to showcase my creativity, but I have been extremely well supported by my mentors and everyone who I have worked with were very cooperative which makes my role very enjoyable.

How has being involved with Loughborough Sport helped you develop and progress (personally and professionally)?

Being involved with Loughborough Sport has helped me to develop my interpersonal skills. I have never gotten an opportunity before to apply my creativity into something at this scale. Therefore, volunteering as badminton MMC gave me an insight into the way people can communicate in a workplace to achieve goals.

What’s the best advice you could give to a Loughborough student looking to get involved in volunteering & gain the most out of their university experiences?

Never doubt yourself and always just go for it. If you see a role that you are interested, don’t hesitate to apply. The CVA is a really good place to start developing your skills for your future career.

Finally, what did you enjoy most about volunteering?

Because my role was mainly about creativity, I enjoyed seeing my work turn from plans into reality. I also enjoyed meeting and communicating with new people whom I simply wouldn’t have crossed paths without this role. I also enjoyed the opportunity to travel with the team to away day matches especially to the BUCS nationals and BUCS Big Wednesday where we won many trophies. To be able to be live at the games, capturing moments of happiness by the athletes is also very satisfying.
