The former Great Britain international athlete joins the university following a glittering career in athletics that included topping the podium in the men’s 400m hurdles at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2011 World Championships.
Greene, 38, also won gold at the European Championships in 2011 before captaining the Great Britain athletics team at the 2012 Olympic Games, where he made the finals of the 400m hurdles and 4 x 400m respectively.
Greene brings with him 20 years of experience training and competing at both development and elite levels. He has been mentored and coached by some of the world’s most well-respected coaches, including Malcolm Arnold, coach to World Champions Colin Jackson and Andrew Pozzi, and Benke Blomkvist, previous UK Coaching and BBC Sports Personality ‘Coach of the Year’.
Based at the Paula Radcliffe stadium on campus, Greene will be coaching a 400m and 400 hurdles group which includes 2024 double Olympic bronze medallist and current PhD student Alex Haydock-Wilson.
Alongside coaching, Greene will act as an event lead, taking on the management of the sprints and hurdles programme of the reigning BUCS Indoor and Outdoor athletics programme.
Following his appointment, Greene told Loughborough Sport: "Joining Loughborough University as Head of Sprints and Hurdles brings about an exciting new chapter in my career.
“I'm looking forward to being a part of a passionate and dynamic performance team and working with talented young athletes. Drawing on my knowledge and experience from my time at the highest level of the sport I aim to create an environment that supports athletes, allowing them to thrive and fulfil their potential."
Femi Akinsanya, Director of Athletics, at Loughborough University, said: “Following a competitive and robust recruitment process we’re delighted to welcome Dai to the team.
“We were particularly impressed with the vision he has for the programme, his five year plan for sprints at Loughborough, and the way he plans to work with our existing coaches, event leads and practitioner team. The strong relationships he maintains with his own former coaches, mentors and GB team mates will enhance an already university-leading athletics programme, and we’re delighted to have Dai on board”.
