Showcase Events

In addition to the regular leagues and One Day Events, there are several high profile showcase events that are run throughout the course of the year to give Loughborough students additional opportunities, both internally and externally.

Football Cup Final

The highlight of the IMS football calendar is not a date to be missed. Each year hundreds of students descend on the Loughborough University Football Stadium to support their hall as they try and claim the coveted title of IMS Football Cup Winners for the year!

  • Matches take place on grass pitches rather than the rubbercrumb pitches that league games are played on.
  • Matches are 90 minutes long, compared to the 70 minute league matches.

Netball Cup Final

The Netball Cup is one of the most popular competitions within IMS and the premier female knock out competition. Every year hundreds of spectators gather to support their hall try and claim the title of ‘IMS Netball Cup Winners’ in a noisy and passionate environment!

 Rules (traditional netball rules apply with the following addition): 

  • Games are 40 minutes long. With 4 quarters of 10 minutes. This is slightly different to league matches (which are 4 quarters of 7 minutes)

IMS All-Stars

Every year the best of IMS comes together to compete against the AU in a series of one off fixtures across the course of one day on campus.

Players who have performed exceptionally within their IMS leagues are nominated to attend trials and a selection of then form part of an All-Stars squad. These individuals from across the halls are trained by enthusiastic coaches from the AU set up over the course over the final few months of term to ensure they are as prepared as possible to take on the might of the AU.

Currently All-Stars fixtures take place in:

  • Women’s Hockey
  • Women’s Basketball
  • Mixed Volleyball
  • Women’s Football
  • Women’s Netball
  • Men’s Football
  • Men’s Hockey
  • Men’s Basketball
  • Men’s Rugby

2017/18 was an incredibly close set of fixtures featuring excellent quality and large crowds with the AU eventually coming out on top with a hard fought 5-4 victory.

Durham Varsity

Representatives from Loughborough’s IMS programme have the opportunity to face their counterparts in Varsity fixtures against both Nottingham and Durham.

2015/2016 saw the first ever Durham-Loughborough Intramural Varsity match take place. 120 students travelled to Durham to take part in 7 fixtures including football, basketball, rugby, netball and hockey. Loughborough came away with a 5-2 victory. This trip was repeated in 2017/18 with Durham and Loughborough competing over 9 fixtures across the course of a day. Durham eventually came out on top 5-4 after some incredibly close ties and a strong – yet friendly – rivalry has begun!

Nottingham Varsity

Representatives from Loughborough’s IMS programme have the opportunity to face their counterparts in Varsity fixtures against both Nottingham and Durham.

Loughborough and Nottingham have been battling it out in their intramural varsity for 14 years. A variety of sports have been played during this period but it is always a day to look forward to as Loughborough’s best halls of residence take on Nottingham’s teams across a full day of sport.

Rugby Super Series

IMS Rugby Super Series was a brand new programme launched for 2017! The very best Rugby talent comes together to form four unstoppable squads battling it out to become the IMS Super Series Champions! 

Super Series is an opportunity for students who aren’t part of the AU to:
1. Be coached by qualified National One Rugby Players including players who have also played in the BUCS SUPER RUGBY league
2. Experience what it is like to be involved in a professional programme 
3. Be involved in a high profile event with an average of over 500 spectators per game
4. Be talent spotted for next year
5. Play the highest level of Rugby IMS can provide

The teams are made up of the best players from each hall who are separated based on each hall’s strengths and weaknesses- they then make up the following 4 Super Series Teams:

Rugby First XV Pitch

Each team will play one another over the course of the 3 rounds with one team being named overall IMS Super Series Champions.
