Swimming Pool Closure Summer 2025
In the summer of 2025, between 14 July and 19 September*, our swimming pool will shut to undergo a major upgrade focused on energy decarbonisation.
* While we aim to reopen on Saturday 20 September, please note that this precise date is subject to change. We will keep you regularly updated and notify you as soon as a reopening date in September is confirmed.
Securing a long-term future for the pool
The University’s ambition is to meet Government targets of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, with significant progress by 2040.
The swimming pool is identified in the University’s Energy Strategy 2020 – 2050, as the top energy consuming building per m2. The building is not scheduled for replacement. Therefore, we are planning to decarbonise the entire building by removing the 20+ year old fossil fuel burning gas boilers and replacing them with heat pumps to provide space heating, hot water, pool water heating and heating for the heat recovery ventilation.
While closed, we are using the opportunity to make other significant upgrades to ensure our facility remains world-leading. These include:
-
New reception foyer including upgraded access gates
-
Complete retiling of the pool surround area, walls, and seating
-
Refreshed changing room and poolside showers
For updates on this project, keep an eye on this webpage, your emails and LSport app push notifications. We appreciate your support in our commitment to environmental sustainability.
The impact for our current members
If you are Loughborough Sport Bronze, Silver, or Gold member, we understand this closure will affect your experience with us for an extended period of the summer.
As part of our ongoing commitment to you, we have taken a series of measures to try and mitigate the impact of the closure as much as possible. Below is more information for all of our members.
Staff, affiliate, community, and student fixed term memberships
Annual Memberships
All annual memberships are charged for 11 months, with 1 month given free of charge. Any refunds due will be calculated excluding the free month.
Gold and Silver memberships
Members with a membership end date on or after 1 October can request a cancellation to sportmemberships@lboro.ac.uk between 14 and 31 July 2025.
No cancellation or refund requests will be accepted after 1 August 2025.
In doing so all membership benefits will be removed; however, you will receive a full reimbursement (in line with our terms and conditions) for the days remaining on your membership.
Bronze memberships
Bronze members with an end date after 14 July will automatically have their membership extended by the number of days your membership is valid to. If your membership end date is on or after 19 September, all 68 days (the closure period) will be included in this extension from 20 September. During this closure period, your membership will still be active allowing you to continue to use your other Bronze membership benefits.
Alternatively, refund requests may be made between 14 and 31 July 2025.
Bronze annual memberships will continue to be available to purchase throughout this period and will be extended accordingly, as above.
2024/25 Academic Year
Please note, if you have a student 2024/25 Academic Year membership, the vacation period during July and August is not included in the cost of this membership and is provided by Loughborough Sport at no additional charge.
Therefore, if you have a 2024/25 Bronze Academic Year membership your pool access will end on the 14 July but all your other benefits will remain throughout the summer vacation period until 1 September 2025.
Direct debit members
Gold and Silver
Gold and Silver members can request that their direct debit be frozen for August and September payments. Your membership benefits will be removed for 2 months from the date of your choice between 14th July and 31st July.
If you choose to do this, all requests must be received between 1st and 25th July to sportmemberships@lboro.ac.uk.
Important - please do not cancel your direct debit with your bank.
After your 2-month membership freeze, your membership will automatically be reinstated. Those who have cancelled their direct debit with their bank will need to re-join and pay the joining fees.
Bronze
All Bronze members who pay by direct debit will have their membership automatically frozen for the closure period, half the monthly payment will be taken for July, and no payment will be taken for August. An announcement on any payment taken for September will be announced before the end of July.
Despite the membership freeze, all your other Bronze benefits will still be available during the closure period. If you have any queries, please email sportmemberships@lboro.ac.uk to speak to a member of our membership team.
