We want the best student athletes to be part of our performance programmes and teams and can offer considerable direct financial support.

All student athletes in our performance programmes benefit from our unrivalled support and ethos of sporting development.

Performance squad members receive thousands of pounds worth of support, incorporating coaching, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, sports science, nutrition, psychology, lifestyle and academic flexibility. In addition to this incredible support, our sport scholarships provide direct financial support.

Athletics Scholarships

Three levels of sport scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £325). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have senior major Championships representation.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £325). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have a top 3 senior ranking, and/or have been a finalist at a major age group or World Universities championships.

Tier 3 offers Powerbase and Club membership worth around £325. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have a top 3 U20, top 3 U23 and/or top 10 senior ranking.

We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates. These levels and criteria are a guide. We can choose to support applicants at any level, if we are looking for competitors in specific events, applicants who stand out as leaders, or applicants who can make a significant contribution to our competition aims. Our coaching staff will consider applicants as part of the admissions cycle.

Winning BUCS Outdoors or Indoors title, or finishing top 3 in BUCS XC Championships (assuming continuation of studies)

U20, U23 or senior UK national record.

Top 15 European senior XC, top 30 senior World XC

Placing in top 20 of European U20 or U23 XC Championships, or in top 50 of World U20 XC, or in top 30 of European senior or top 60 of World senior XC Championships.

 

Selection for any World or European Indoor Senior Championships or Commonwealth Games

Badminton Scholarships

Three levels of sport scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership worth around a further £475. To be considered for this level of support athletes would need to meet at least one of the following criteria: Have represented the England Senior team at Championship events; have a BWF ranking of top 100 for singles or top 70 for doubles; achieved the following performances at international senior level, International Challenge top 4 (singles), top 2 (doubles), International Series top 2 (singles), win (doubles); achieved a top 16 (singles) top 8 (doubled) at the World Junior Championships or top 4 place at the European Junior Championships.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership worth around a further £475. To be considered for this level of support athletes would need to meet at least one of the following criteria: Have a BWF ranking of 200 for singles or 125 for doubles; achieved a minimum of 2 of the following senior international performances, International Challenge top 8 (singles) top 4 (doubles), International Series top 4 (singles), top 2 (doubles), Future Series top 2 (singles). Junior athletes would need to have achieved top 32 (singles) top 16 (doubles) at the World Junior Championships or top 8 at the European Junior Championships or currently be an athlete on the Excel England Pathway programme.

Tier 3 provides Powerbase and Club membership worth around £475. To be considered for this level athletes would need to be currently on the Progress England Pathway programme or be perceived to make a significant impact on our performance targets.

We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates. These levels and criteria are a guide. We can choose to support applicants at any level, if we are looking for competitors in specific events, for applicants who stand out as leaders, or applicants committed to our competition goals. Our coaching staff will consider applicants as part of the admissions cycle.

All the above performance criteria should be backed up with evidence of strong performances against recognised opposition. International athletes would need to evidence the equivalent level to the England Performance Pathway criteria and selection policies for events.

Cricket Scholarships (Men)

Three levels of sport scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership worth around a further £350. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have been offered a ‘rookie’ contract or have played either 2 first-class or A list matches for a first-class county.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership worth around a further £350. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to be a County second team regular and following a discussion with your first-class county coach.

Tier 3 provides Powerbase and Club membership worth around £350. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have a county cricket academy written agreement or be playing regularly for a national county.

We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates. These levels and criteria are a guide. We can choose to support applicants at any level, if we are looking for competitors with a specialist discipline, applicants who stand out as leaders, or applicants committed to our competition goals. Our coaching staff will consider applicants as part of the admissions cycle.

As all squad members have to go through an application and trials process, a scholarship offer would be withdrawn if an applicant didn't make the performance squad.

International applicants would need to demonstrate that their experience is at an equivalent level.

Cricket Scholarships (Women)

Three levels of sport scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £375). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have played regular senior international cricket within the past 2 years.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £375). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to be currently involved in the England Development Programme or playing in The Hundred but not be a salaried player on a Centre of Excellence senior squad.

Tier 3 offers Powerbase and Club membership worth around £375. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to be part of a Centre of Excellence Academy.

We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates. These levels and criteria are a guide. We can choose to support applicants at any level, if we are looking for competitors with a specialist discipline, applicants who stand out as leaders, or applicants committed to our competition goals. Cycling Scholarships

Cycling scholarships range from offering Powerbase and AU Cycling Club membership fees worth around £275, through to up to £5,000 per year for exceptional candidates. 

To be considered for a cycling scholarship, candidates are expected to be competing at, or approaching, international level in their chosen discipline, or demonstrated success at top national level. Whilst we would consider applicants from any discipline, scholarship offers will be made with a priority for road, track (endurance and sprint), time trial, hill climb, and downhill MTB.

We can choose to support applicants at any level, if we are looking for competitors in specific events, applicants who stand out as leaders, or applicants that are committed to and can make a substantial contribution towards our competition goals. Our coaching staff will consider applicants as part of the admissions cycle.

Football Scholarships (Men)

Three levels of sport scholarship are available:

Tiers 1 & 2 offers between £1,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and AU Club membership worth around a further £400. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would meet one or more of the following: Category 1 Academy scholar at Premier League or Football League Club; 1 year or 2 year professional at a Football League Club; 30+ first team appearances at Step 3 non-league or above in the English Football Pyramid; IFSA U18 national representation; U17 or U19 national age representation.

Tier 3 provides Powerbase and AU Club membership worth around £400. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would meet one or more of the following: Scholar at a Category 2 or 3 Academy; 30+ first team appearances at Step 4 or 5; Schools and Colleges Home Nations representation.

We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates. These levels and criteria are a guide. We can choose to support applicants at any level, if we are position focused, or looking for applicants who stand out as leaders, or applicants committed to our competition goals. Scholars are expected to be available for selection for ALL our United Counties League (Step 5) commitments, which include out of term time fixtures such as Boxing Day, New Years Day, Easter etc. Our coaching staff will consider applicants as part of the admissions cycle.

Football Scholarships (Women)

Three levels of sport scholarship are available:

Tiers 1 & 2 offer between £1,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and AU Club membership worth around a further £400. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would meet one or more of the following: England long list/age group representation; WSL first team squad member; Championship first team squad member; 15+ appearances at WSL Academy; 15+ appearances at Tier 3 (FA Women’s National League).

Tier 3 provides Powerbase and AU Club membership worth around £400. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would meet one or more of the following: WSL Academy/Championship development squad member; Tier 3 (FA Women’s National League) squad member.

We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates. These levels and criteria are a guide. We can choose to support applicants at any level, if we are position focused, or looking for applicants who stand out as leaders, or applicants committed to our competition goals. Our coaching staff will consider applicants as part of the admissions cycle. 

Hockey Scholarships (Men)

Three levels of sport scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £400). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have experience with either the England elite development programme or above, or regular senior home nation representation.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £400). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have England U21 or home nation senior representation experience.

Tier 3 offers Powerbase and Club membership worth around £400. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have England U18 or home nation U21 representation experience.

We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates. These levels and criteria are a guide. We can choose to support applicants at any level, if we are position focused, or looking for applicants who stand out as leaders, or applicants committed to our competition goals. International applicants would need to demonstrate that their experience was at an equivalent level. Our coaching staff will consider applicants as part of the admissions cycle.

Only players who commit to playing for Loughborough Students in the EHL Division One North will be considered for sport scholarship support.

Hockey Scholarships (Women)

Three levels of sport scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and AU Club membership worth around a further £380. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have experience with the England senior team, or a nation of an equivalent standard.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and AU Club membership worth around a further £380. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have England U21/Great Britain U23 tournament representation or equivalent standard experience.

Tier 3 offers Powerbase and AU Club membership worth around £380. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have had U18 international tournament representation.

We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates. These levels and criteria are a guide. We can choose to support applicants at any level, if we are position focused, or looking for applicants who stand out as leaders, or applicants committed to our competition goals. Our coaching staff will consider applicants as part of the admissions cycle.

Only players who commit to playing for Loughborough Students in the Investec Women’s Hockey League will be considered for sport scholarship support.

Netball Scholarships

Three levels of sport scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £350). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have regular senior major championships representation for England or a nation of an equivalent standard. We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £350). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have U21 representation at World Youth Championships or part of the England Futures programme.

Tier 3 offers Powerbase and Club membership worth around £350. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have U19 representation at Netball Europe; U21 long squad for World Cup preparation; regular starting 7 Superleague; or National Academy experience.

We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates. These levels and criteria are a guide. We can choose to support applicants at any level, if we are position focused, or looking for applicants who stand out as leaders, or applicants committed to our competition goals. Rugby Union Scholarships (Men)

Three levels of sport scholarships are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500 plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £400). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have top nation senior international representation and/or be an experienced level 1 player (such as a Premiership squad player), or a regular Championship player.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000 plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £400). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have U20 international experience with a tier 1 nation.

Tier 3 provides Powerbase and Club membership worth around £400. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would be current Premiership senior academy players continuing their studies.

We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates. These levels and criteria are a guide. We can choose to support applicants at any level, if we are looking for applicants in specific positions, applicants who stand out as leaders, or applicants committed to our competition goals. All sport scholars will be full and active members of the performance squad. Our coaching staff will consider applicants as part of the admissions cycle.

The Daryl Jelinek Sporting Scholarship

Loughborough University is delighted to offer The Daryl Jelinek Sporting Scholarship to a high quality individual with Premiership senior academy, Championship, England Students, significant National 1 or equivalent experience. The scholarship is offered to support any Masters course at the University [NB: The funding is available for either the traditional one year full time Masters or for two years if the option to split study is taken].

The value of the scholarship is £2000-4000 per annum aligned to the playing experience of the applicant.

Daryl Jelinek studied at Loughborough University from 1980 to 1983, where he captained the rugby team as well as playing for England U23s. Daryl went on to play rugby for Blackheath, London Scottish, and the Anglo-Scots. When Daryl passed away in July 2018, the Daryl Jelinek Sporting Scholarship was established by Daryl’s family and friends to create a legacy that will continue to help young people at Loughborough for many years to come.

Rugby Union Scholarships (Women)

Three levels of sport scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £400). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have regular senior 15s major Championships representation (6 Nations, World Cup) for England or a tier 1 nation, or Olympic or Commonwealth Games 7s representation.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £400). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have EPS (or equivalent) selection experience, senior international 15s representation or senior 7s representation at Rugby Europe or equivalent.

Tier 3 provides Powerbase and Club membership worth around £400. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have U18 representation at Rugby Europe 7s, U20s 15s representation or regular starting women’s Premier 15s experience.

We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates. These levels and criteria are a guide. We can choose to support applicants at any level, if we are looking for applicants in specific positions, applicants who stand out as leaders, or applicants committed to our competition goals. All sport scholars will be full and active members of the performance squad. Our coaching staff will consider applicants as part of the admissions cycle.

Squash Scholarships

Three levels of sport scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and AU Club membership (worth around a further £300). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have either national team representation, be part of England Squash’s England Academy (or National equivalent), have finished within the top 10 of the British Junior Open (U17/U19) or World Juniors (U19), or be ranked within the top 150 on the PSA world rankings. World and European Junior Rankings can be taken into account where relevant.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and AU Club membership (worth around a further £300). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have either national team representation, be currently part of the England Squash’s England Development Squad (or National equivalent), have finished within the top 16 at the British Junior Open (U17/U19) or World Juniors (U19), or be ranked within the top 250 on the PSA world rankings. World and European Junior Rankings can be taken into account where relevant.

Tier 3 Powerbase and AU Club membership, worth around £300. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would either be part of the England Squash’s England Potential Squad (or National equivalent). Ranked within the top 30 in England (U19), national equivalent or be ranked in the top 300 on the PSA world rankings. World and European Junior Rankings can be taken into account where relevant.

We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates. These levels and criteria are a guide. We can choose to support applications at any level if we are looking for applicants committed to our competition goals. Our coaching staff will consider applicants as part of the admissions cycle.

In addition to the above support, performance squad members may receive support with entry, travel and accommodation expenses to competitions and events.

Swimming Scholarships

Three levels of sport scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £335). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to be within 1% of the FINA A qualifying times.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £335). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to be within 2% of the FINA A qualifying times.

Tier 3 offers Powerbase and Club membership worth around £335. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to be within 4% of the FINA A qualifying times.

Tennis Scholarships

Three levels of sport scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and AU Tennis Club performance membership (worth around a further £335). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have a current or previous WTA/ATP world ranking.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and AU Tennis Club performance membership (worth around a further £335). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have a current or previous ITF world tennis ranking.

Tier 3 provides Powerbase and AU Tennis Club performance membership worth around £335. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have a junior ITF world ranking, inside the top 1,000.

We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates. These levels and criteria are a guide. We can choose to support applicants at any level, for outstanding candidates with a proven track record. Our coaching staff will consider applicants as part of the admissions cycle.

Triathlon Scholarships

Three levels of sport scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and AU Club membership (worth around a further £350). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have a podium finish at an elite individual continental triathlon championship, or a top 8 finish at the World Championships (individual events only).

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and AU Club membership (worth around a further £350). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have GBR elite triathlon representation at junior or U23 level, or senior major championships representation.

Tier 3 offers Powerbase and AU Club membership worth around £350. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have podium finish at National Triathlon Championships/Super Series (junior or senior elite), World Universities representation, or a podium finish at BUCS Sprint Championships.

We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates. These levels and criteria are a guide. We can choose to support applicants at any level if we feel they would make a unique contribution to the squad. Our coaching staff will consider applicants as part of the admissions cycle.

Olympic and Paralympic Sport Scholarships

Two levels of sport scholarship are available to summer Olympic and Paralympic sport applicants. (If your Olympic sport is athletics, badminton, hockey, swimming or triathlon, please refer to the sport specific information.):

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus AU Club membership (worth around a further £100). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have senior European/World Championships representation for Great Britain or a nation of an equivalent standard, and be part of their NBG performance pathway.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus AU Club membership (worth around a further £100). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have age group European/World Championships representation for Great Britain or a nation of an equivalent standard, and be part of their NGB performance pathway.

The above criteria are a guide only, and experience at these levels is not a guarantee that an application will be successful, or that we will choose to support anyone in sports where we don't have a performance programme. An applicants’ attitude and commitment to Loughborough Sport is also taken into account. All scholars are expected to join the relevant Athletic Union club, and represent Loughborough University in the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) competitions.

International Sports Student Postgraduate Bursary

We are looking for postgraduate students athletes who can add value to our performance programmes, and compete for Loughborough University in the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) competition.

Our International Sports Student Postgraduate Bursary is a 40% reduction in tuition fees, which have a value of around £8,000 (set against the tuition fees of your chosen postgraduate taught programme ONLY). The bursaries are for those competing at a high level in sport, are funded by Loughborough University and are for self-funding students.

The standard for the award of bursaries is high, and the selection panel will be looking for the very highest academic and sporting achievers, so do ensure that your application is clear, and reflects your academic abilities, sporting achievements and motivation.

Students should submit an official application for their chosen postgraduate programme, and have been offered a conditional place to study before applying for this bursary. We won't consider applications without a postgraduate application number and confirmation of offer.

We currently have performance programmes in athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, cycling, football, field hockey, netball, rugby union, swimming, squash, tennis and triathlon. We would also consider lacrosse and american football.

The deadline for applications is 28 May 2021. All applications will be reviewed after this date, and you will be contacted regarding the outcome by 25 June 2021. In exceptional circumstances we may make a decision before this, but we will usually wait until the closing date, so please don't apply too early and lose an opportunity to tell us about your most recent achievements!

Elite Athlete Doctoral Scholarships

We have a fantastic opportunity for budding researchers to continue their studies alongside their sporting development with our Elite Athlete Doctoral Scholarships.

The scholarship covers UK tuition fees, and a living stipend worth around £15k per year (for 3 years). 

We are looking for sporting applicants competing in our performance programmes*, who are either targeting a major senior international event, have a realistic opportunity of competing at senior international level within 18 months, or who can demonstrate the potential to make a significant contribution to Loughborough’s sporting success. We expect all of our scholars to compete for the University in BUCS and contribute generally to our sporting objectives.

As a budding researcher, you will need to meet the academic requirements for PhD study, identify a subject area, and find a supervisor to work with you. Opportunities vary by discipline, and there are advertised projects available, or you can devise your own research proposal. If you would like to be considered for an Elite Athlete Doctoral Scholarship, once you have lined up a project, please complete the following application form by 20th May 2022. Following acceptance on to a PhD programme, and Loughborough Sports' recommendation, a panel convened by the Doctoral College will make the final decision on scholarship recipients. For exceptional candidates, Loughborough Sport would look to make an immediate sporting recommendation, although the PhD application will need to follow the usual processes.

These scholarships are for projects starting in October 2022, and are only available for students who have not already started their PhD at Loughborough University.

The Elite Athlete Doctoral Scholarship is just one of a number of opportunities for postgraduate research, so do have a look at what else is available.
