Our passionate and driven strength and conditioning team work alongside our coaching staff and athletes to develop quality physical and athletic development programmes.

What is strength and conditioning support?

We have a team of strength and conditioning coaches working together with our high flying student-athletes, with the main purpose of ensuring that they are fit and strong enough to cope with the demands of their sport. The team are responsible in delivering a leading athletic development programme for the duration of the student-athletes’ time at Loughborough University, and are highly knowledgeable and experienced in a number of areas. The team of coaches also provide service and support to external teams and squads

The staff has over 60 years of experience between them in over 30 sports. They have all obtained a postgraduate qualification in the field and are accredited through the UKSCA. The coaches assist with all aspects of training, from improving specifics like strength, power, speed, agility and general conditioning, as well as working to enhance athletes’ durability and reduce injury risk.

The team operates out of the University’s Powerbase Gym, which is fitted with state-of-the-art Technogym equipment, and they also offer bespoke sessions at the various sports facilities on campus. They have experience working with a wide range of sports, and cater for a range of athletes, from beginner to elite.

Student placement opportunities

Our team

Chris Wright

Head of Strength and Conditioning

Chris is a UKSCA accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach whose career incorporates extensive experience overseeing the design, implementation and monitoring of tailored Strength and Conditioning programmes. Combining expertise across areas of fitness coaching, strength & conditioning and performance monitoring, Chris plays a key role in optimising physiological output, rehabilitation and injury prevention for athletes competing in a high-performance environment.

Over the past decade Chris has worked with a variety of athletes, ranging from youth development all the way through to full internationals, both at home and abroad. 

Chris Baird

Senior Strength and Conditioning Coach

Chris holds a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science and an MSc in Strength and Conditioning. He is also UKSCA accredited and has over seven years of experience in the field. Providing strength and conditioning help to athletes from many sports, including football, rugby, swimming and weightlifting, Chris has also worked with Castleford Tigers and Peterborough United Academy.

Nathan Bullock

Senior Strength and Conditioning Coach

Nathan is a UKSCA accredited coach, alongside a BSc in Applied Sports Science and an MSc in Strength & Conditioning. Nathan’s previous roles include working at Manchester City Football Club, Calgary Foothills Soccer Club, Welsh Rugby Union, Namibia Rugby Union and Ireland Rugby Football Union, amongst other regional and national level athletes who competed in track and field, swimming and boxing.  Nathan leads Strength & Conditioning delivery for Athletics, Basketball and Tennis.

Nathan also leads on the student placement opportunites within our Strength and Conditioning team.  

Kam Sodha

Senior Strength and Conditioning Coach

Kam is a UKSCA accredited strength and conditioning coach who has a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science. He is currently working toward his MSc in Exercise Physiology and has two years of experience in the field. He has mostly worked with rugby, hockey and netball, and he has helped the Welsh Rugby Union senior side as well as Leicester Tigers with their strength and conditioning needs.

Stephen Breisner

Strength and Conditioning Coach

Stephen has a vast experience working in Olympic and Paralympic sport predominantly with British Triathlon and Paratriathlon. He also spent some time working of the Chinese Olympic Committee providing S&C services to several athletes at the national centre in Beijing, including weightlifters and divers. Stephen has also worked with British Equestrian and supported a variety of other sports preparing athletes for Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Adam Burton

Strength and Conditioning Coach

Adam holds a BSc in Sport and Exercises Sciences and an MSc in Exercise Physiology. He is also a UKSCA Accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach, and was awarded “Emerging S&C Coach of the Year” in 2019. He has previously worked for Leicester City Football Club and more recently Game Changer Performance delivering the Residential Rehab Programme at St. George’s Park for professional footballers. Adam is also a Physical Performance Coach for The Football Association working with the England youth teams.  

Tom Summers

Strength and Conditioning Coach

Tom holds a BSc in Strength and Conditioning and a MSc in Advanced Coaching in Strength and Conditioning. He is CSCS accredited and has experience working in a variety of sports, which most recently includes the Welsh Rugby Union and Welsh Cricket.

Andy Thompson-Kobus

Strength and Conditioning Coach

Andy is a UKSCA accredited strength and conditioning coach with a BSc in Sports and Exercise Science and an MSc in Strength and Conditioning. He has seven years of experience working in this field, and he has worked with athletes involved in football, rugby, swimming and weightlifting. He has supported athletes who have competed at the Commonwealth and World University Games.

Saskia Thompson-Kobus

Strength and Conditioning Coach

Saskia has a BSc in Sport and exercise science and an MSc in Musculoskeletal sports science and Health. She has over seven years’ experience of working in this field and has worked with many teams, mainly men’s and women’s Hockey.  She has successfully supported athletes who have progressed into senior programs and who were successful in the Olympics.  She is currently working with TASS athletes and Squash.

Jack Baker

Graduate Strength and Conditioning Coach

Jack has a BSc. in Sport and Exercise Science and a PGDip in Strength and Conditioning. Jack has worked as a multi-sport S&C coach with Game Changer Performance on the PFA residential rehabilitation programme and across performance and commercial environments with able and para-athletes in a variety of different sports.

Anne Sharpe

Graduate Strength and Conditioning Coach

Anne holds an MSc in Strength and Conditioning. Prior to taking this role she spent 2 years on a placement with the England and Wales Cricket board.  Most recently Anne completed a volunteer placement with the Strength and Conditioning team at Loughborough Sport.
