BUCS swim success

Candice Hall and Abbie Wood (left and centre) enjoyed a successful weekend.

Loughborough swimmers turned on the style at last weekend’s British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) National Championships, returning home with 30 medals and five broken records – and the over the overall team title.

After some blistering performances, Loughborough’s impressive team secured a total of 11 gold, 13 silver, and six bronzes, blowing away a competitive field.

Marie Wattel had a weekend to remember in Sheffield after winning a mammoth four golds - in the 100m Butterfly, 4 x 100m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, and 50m Butterfly - with the latter two also both new BUCS records.

Wattel was joined by Candice Hall, Emily Crane, and Abbie Wood in the 4 x 100m Freestyle with each swimmer contributing to a storming victory.

Elsewhere, Abbie Wood’s stunning swim in the 200m Individual Medley set a new BUCS record whilst she also secured another gold in the 200m Freestyle.

Luke Greenbank was also in red hot form, crushing the competition with a new BUCS record in the 200m Backstroke and he also touched the wall first in the 100m Backstroke.

Joe Litchfield secured a brilliant double gold in the 100m Butterfly and 200m Individual Medley respectively, whilst Emily Crane’s strong swim in the 50m Freestyle saw her take first place.

There was also a whole host of silver medals in the pool with Candice Hall taking second place in both the 200m Freestyle and 200m Butterfly.

Charlotte Evans did brilliantly in the 200m Backstroke, whilst Joe Litchfield (200m Freestyle), Megan Morrison (50m Breaststroke), Archie Goodburn (50m Breaststroke), Emily Barclay (50m Freestyle), Alex Bowen (50m Freestyle), Greg Butler (100m Breaststroke), and James McFadzen (200m Individual Medley) all also won silver.

There was also success in the 400m Medley, with Charlotte Evans, Megan Morrison, Marie Wattel, and Candice Hall taking silver for the women, whilst Luke Greenbank, Greg Butler, Joe Litchfield, and Sam Irvine did the same for the men.

A busy and hugely successful weekend for Loughborough was capped with bronze medals for Emily Crane (50m Backstroke and 100m Freestyle), Megan Morrison (200m Breastroke and 100m Breastroke), Archie Goodburn (100m Breastroke) and Joe Litchfield, Alex Bowen, Archie Goodburn and Sam Irvine (Men’s 4 x 100m Freestyle).
