Election 2019: the Brexit Campaign?
On 31 January Loughborough University London plays host to a conference that will revisit and reconsider the 2019 General Election.
The event is organised by the Loughborough University Centre for Research in Communication and Culture and Ipsos MORI, in conjunction with the British Polling Council. Political, media and polling experts will take part in a post-election gathering that has been held after every UK General Election since 1979.
Participants will discuss the campaigns and consequences of an election that saw the Conservatives gain a large parliamentary majority for the first time in more than a generation. The extent to which UK-EU relations dominated the election will be considered, particularly Boris Johnson’s ‘Get Brexit Done’ slogan.
The event will also consider what happened to Labour and the Liberal Democrats, with both parties now beginning the search for new leaders. By contrast the Scottish National Party believe their election success strengthens their case for a further vote on independence from the UK.
Conference speakers include:
- David Deacon, Loughborough University
- Adam Baxter, Ofcom
- Tara Beard-Knowland and Ben Page, Ipsos MORI
- John Curtice, University of Strathclyde
- Isla Glaister, Sky News
- Nick Moon, Moonlight Research
- Anthony Wells, YouGov
Professor Dominic Wring, a professor of Political Communication and the event organiser commented: “Loughborough University is delighted to be hosting our third post-election conference following the success of our events after the 2015 and 2017 campaigns.
"It is fitting we meet on the day the UK formally leaves the EU to discuss the extent to which Brexit dominated December’s General Election”
