Basketball at Loughborough has grown rapidly over the past five years and is now one of the leading programmes in the UK for men’s basketball.

Men’s Basketball at Loughborough caters to players of all abilities, from those picking up a ball for the first time to seasoned competitors, providing opportunities to play, improve, and enjoy the sport in a welcoming environment. 

Our basketball programme spans a variety of pathways, including competitive university leagues, hall competitions, and social play, ensuring there’s something for everyone. The club has strong links with local schools and elite teams, reflecting its growing reputation and commitment to developing talent while fostering a friendly, inclusive community.

Performance

Loughborough Riders, our high-performance basketball team, compete in both the UK’s National Basketball League Division One (NBL D1) and the British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) competitions for Loughborough Students’ Basketball.

The programme is delivered in partnership with Leicester Riders, a leading team in the British Basketball League, as well as with Loughborough College and Charnwood College, a renowned basketball academy.

Athletic Union (AU)

Our elite team competes in the BUCS Premier League, alongside three additional teams participating in other BUCS competitions.

For those looking for a more relaxed approach, our development team welcomes players of all abilities. Whether you want to improve your skills, enjoy the game in a friendly environment, or meet new people, the development team provides the perfect opportunity to get involved.

Training takes place twice a week in the Sir David Wallace Sports Hall or the Netball & Badminton Centre.

Hall Sport

Hall Sport, also known as Inter Mural Sport (IMS), is a free way to enjoy basketball, meet new people, and get involved in hall life.  

The men’s league features weekly fixtures with teams competing in a structured pool and finals format, ensuring every game is competitive and exciting.  

The league is open to all hall teams, excluding Athletic Union players, to create a fair and balanced playing environment. It’s the perfect opportunity to improve your skills, enjoy regular matches, and experience the friendly rivalry of hall basketball at Loughborough.

Social Sport

The social sport programme offers competitive weekly leagues to play socially with groups of friends, societies and departments.

You can join our mixed Basketball league for fun, casual 3v3 games where no prior experience is needed. Matches are short, energetic, and designed to be enjoyable for everyone.

It’s a great way to meet new people, stay active, and enjoy basketball in a relaxed, friendly environment.
