Loughborough Lightning vs Sporting Khalsa

Loughborough Lightning produced the performance of their season when it mattered most, storming to an outstanding 6-0 win over Sporting Khalsa on the final day of the season to secure Tier 3 football for another year.

With pressure at its highest, Lightning showed no signs of nerves at Loughborough University Stadium. From the opening whistle, they played with purpose, intensity and belief, taking control early and never allowing Khalsa a route back into the game.

The breakthrough came after just 10 minutes. Georgia Hewitt’s free-kick caused problems in the Khalsa box and took a deflection on its way in, giving Lightning the perfect start. Seven minutes later, the lead was doubled in spectacular fashion as Delglyn announced her return with a free-kick that crashed off the crossbar and over the line.

Lightning’s attacking rhythm continued after the half time break. An instant second-half chance saw Coutts strike the woodwork, before the hosts added a fourth on 49 minutes when Jarowicki unselfishly squared for Delglyn to slot home her second of the afternoon.

Hewitt’s delivery was again central to the next goal, her corner finding the head of Jacobs, who powered home to make it 5-0 and send the home support into celebration. Lightning would go on to complete the scoring with a sixth through Ella-Mai Coutts, capping a remarkable afternoon and a statement win.

For manager Charles Baxter, the overriding emotion was relief, but also immense pride.

“First feeling is definitely relief amongst other emotions, but really proud of the girls to come through what’s been a difficult season in more ways than one. To put a performance in like that, which we all knew we had in us, sends a statement out that we deserve to be in this league. We have the quality to play at this level and we are, if anything, more hungry to go again.”

Vice-captain Georgia Hewitt echoed that pride after a result that confirmed Lightning’s place in Tier 3 next season.

“I’m absolutely over the moon. I’m so proud of the girls. Our task this season was coming up from Tier 4 to stay in this tough league. We’ve had a hard season but I think that performance today shows what we are about. Getting six goals is great and I’m so glad that we are staying in Tier 3 again next season. Seeing the girls step up into this league has made me really proud.”

After a challenging campaign, Lightning saved their most emphatic display for the day they needed it most. Six goals, a clean sheet, survival secure and a powerful message sent ahead of next season.
