World Energy Day: Loughborough University’s energy usage

The Sustainability Team have shared statistics looking at how much energy the University used in 2021/22, as part of World Energy Day.

The aim of World Energy Day is to raise awareness of energy usage, ensuring safe and sustainable energy for all whilst targeting carbon emissions reductions.

Let’s break down the statistics

In 2021/22 the University’s main campus used 19.9 million kWh of Grid Electricity, alongside 8.7 million kWh generated from our on campus Combined Heat and Power Unit. A total of 28.6 million kWh was consumed. This equates to the average electricity use of 6,400 households.

The main campus consumed 70.8 million kWh of Natural Gas, equating to the average gas use of 5,900 households.

Overall, the carbon emissions for the main campus were 16,602 tC02.

How Loughborough is tackling its emissions

Loughborough University is committed to becoming more sustainable as part of the University’s Energy Strategy. Our aspiration is to be Scope 1 and 2 net zero by 2035, meaning direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the University and emissions from the grid electricity consumed by the University will be net zero. By 2050 we hope to have achieved Scope 3 net zero which refers to indirect emissions associated with the University’s activities like waste disposal, water consumption, staff/student commuting etc. To find out more about our Scope 1,2, and 3 emissions see our carbon journey to net zero.

Loughborough is also leading a number of energy research projects including those looking at low carbon and renewable technologies.

There are a number of ways that staff and students can help to make a difference to reduce the University’s energy consumption:

  • Be energy aware: Take note of what you have control over, for example switching off lights when you are the last out of the office and only boiling as much water as you need.

  • Switch off equipment if you know you are safe to do so, for example, your monitor when you leave your desk.

  • During closure days, please ensure everything that can be switched off is.

  • The University will be launching the Carbon Action Planner, enabling each School, Service and student Hall to create their own Carbon Action Plan and reduce carbon emissions within their areas. The CAP doesn’t just cover Energy, but it will provide a focus and various actions to encourage more efficient use.
