University sport
Representing the university will be a huge part of your student experience. Our Athletic Union has 60 student-led sports clubs to choose from and this is where you get your chance to represent Loughborough University in the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Championship.
Sport is engrained in the fabric of Loughborough University. With more than 60 clubs to join there are plenty of opportunities to represent the university across multiple different competitions and events ranging from BUCS to local leagues, national leagues and national championships and everything in between.
What is BUCS?
BUCS stands for British Universities and Colleges Sport, and is the governing body responsible for organising university sport. BUCS takes many forms; from weekly fixtures and leagues to knockout tournaments and one-off events. Weekly BUCS fixtures traditionally take place on Wednesday afternoons against other universities up and down the country. To help support this, most of our degree programmes offer Wednesday afternoons off from lectures and seminars and we also offer free access to facilities and coaching support.
Every BUCS fixture across all of the sports and competitions wins points for the university which then culminates in an overall BUCS Champion each year. We are proud to have held the BUCS Champions title for 40 consecutive years – no other university has ever beaten us!
What is the AU?
The Athletic Union (AU) is the section of the Students’ Union that offers sporting opportunities to Loughborough students. It is there to run and promote sporting activities and to provide support and guidance to each of its clubs. The AU is here to help you have the best experience possible as a Loughborough student. In order to join an AU club, you will need to pay an AU membership fee.
All of our clubs will have their own competition and training schedules, these will often vary within depending on the level you compete. To find out more about your sport, click on the relevant link below.
