The easiest way to keep up to date with everything to do with music on campus is to sign up to the free Music VIP club. You will receive a regular newsletter with information about upcoming events, performance opportunities, music scholarships and more.
Once you are a Music VIP member, you will be able to access any of the seven music rooms in Martin Hall for solo practice sessions. These rooms are open from 8am to 10pm, seven days a week and you do not need to book a room in advance. For those based in West Park, there is also the Wolfson Piano Room equipped with a digital piano. This room is available 8am to 5pm weekdays only and should be booked using the sign up sheets on the noticeboard outside the room.
LU Arts offers one-to-one music tuition for students and staff, from beginner level to advanced. Tuition is available in a range of instruments including guitar, piano, singing, violin/viola and woodwind. Tuition is purchased in blocks of 2 or 8 hours, with the timing, frequency and duration of lessons agreed with the individual tutor. Anyone wishing to take up music tuition should complete the music tuition enquiry form on LU Arts’ website. Tutors do have limited availability, and enquiries are handled on a ‘first come first serve’ basis.
For anyone wishing to sing in a choir, LU Arts manages the University Choir, which is open to students, staff and the local community (aged 16+). The Choir rehearse on Monday evenings in Cope Auditorium during term time. In addition to weekly rehearsals, the Choir gives several public performances a year, including Christmas and spring concerts. The Choir are also invited to be a part of other University events such as Christmas in the Woods and one-off events. Membership is £15 per term or £25 for an annual membership, free for students.
There are numerous music-based student societies which students can join, including DJ Society, LSU Classical, LSU Sing!, Music Society and Tuxedo Swing. There are also other general interest music societies like Alternative Society and Swift Society on offer.
Talented student musicians and singers can apply for a music scholarship, which recognise, reward and develop music talent. Music scholarships are available in any genre of music including instrumental, vocal and singer-songwriter. Scholars receive a cash prize of £200 and the chance to apply for additional funding to develop their talent further. Applications for 2025-26 are open until 22 October.
LU Arts’ What’s On page is kept up to date with various music and arts events happening across and beyond campus. You can filter for music events only by clicking the ‘Genre’ dropdown box and selecting ‘Music’ or by visiting the Music section of the website to see all events and opportunities
