Loughborough University celebrates International Students’ Day

To mark International Students’ Day, Loughborough University is hosting a week of events from Monday 18 to Friday 22 November, with events that celebrate cultural diversity and foster connections among international students.

Event Highlights

Careers Network Panel and Networking Event

18 November 4pm-6pm, LSU Lounge

A panel offers students insight into career options as international graduates, providing guidance on navigating career paths while managing visa restrictions.

Mixed Sport Session

19 November, Netball Centre

Rec Sport is hosting a sports event for international students to meet others and enjoy team activities.

Scavenger Hunt

20 November 2pm-4.30pm, Hazlerigg Fountain

The International Student Network will be hosting a Scavenger Hunt for students to explore the East Midlands campus. Students should head to Hazlerigg Fountain to receive their first clue and begin the hunt.

Creative Fair and Cultural Showcase

21 November 12pm-4pm

The Creative Fair at the LSU Piazza will see students to sell or showcase handmade crafts, teach others traditional art techniques, and share creative expressions from their home countries. This fair is organised in collaboration with LU Arts, allowing international students to display their work from the Connect & Create workshops. Students at the Cultural Showcase will share their cultures through a vibrant showcase in the LSU Basement. The event will feature food, performances, and games, giving students a chance to represent their heritage and traditions. A highlight of the evening is the fashion show, where students can wear and display traditional outfits. Local food vendors will also offer a taste of global cuisine. 

Language and Culture Café

22 November 1pm-3 pm, LSU Basement

Students are invited to connect through language and cultural exchange. Attendees can learn simple words and phrases from different languages, sample regional foods and drinks, and celebrate the diverse cultural backgrounds that enrich the Loughborough community. 

Support Services for International Students 

Loughborough offers extensive support for international students. Here, some of our international students share their experiences with these support services. 

International Student Experience Team 

The International Student Experience Team supports international students throughout their time at Loughborough. They provide students with a range of activities throughout the year, aiming enhance their overall experience and help students to feel at home.

“The International Student Experience (ISE) Team has been incredibly supportive during my time here. Their events have provided not only valuable information but also opportunities to connect with fellow international students. My favorite event was the Oxford trip alongside bingo lunch days, where I made lasting friendships and learned about diverse cultures. The ISE Team has truly enhanced my university experience.” 

New! The Brighter Winter Programme 

The International Student Experience Team has launched the Brighter Winter Programme, which is for any student aiming to provide activities and social events throughout the darker winter months. Visit their website, on the Student Services events page for further details and for booking information. 

Academic Language and Study Skills 

The ALSS team offers a wide range of support in academic, English language and study skills, such as School-based drop-in session, School-based bookable 1-1 appointments, bookable workshops and online interactive materials on dedicated Learn modules English Language Support, Study Skills, Dissertation and Project Success and STEM Writing. 

“The ALSS has significantly helped me improve my academic English and study skills, such as enhancing my academic writing and critical thinking. Additionally, it has guided me thoroughly in completing my projects and thesis.” 

Careers Network and Talent Match Programme  

The Talent Match programme, pairs students with employers for internships, allowing them to build relevant skills and enhance their employability. Through the Talent Match program, students gain practical skills in communication, teamwork, and professionalism. A student said: “Four weeks was a good amount of time to get in-depth experience. The application process was also straightforward, and the Careers team offered me support with interview practice.” 

LSU International Students’ Network 

The International Students’ Network (ISN) aims to provide a safe space for students where they can get involved, network, feel represented, have fun, spread cultural awareness and learn new things about the world.  

With these events and support services, Loughborough University proudly celebrates its international student community, creating a welcoming and enriching experience for all.
