Staff member receives Excellence Award for promotion of doctoral wellbeing and equality, diversity and inclusion

Dr Katryna Kalawsky, the University’s Doctoral Researcher Development Officer, was one of this year’s recipients of the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence.

Each year the awards are given to those supporting the delivery of the University strategy in one or more of the following areas:

  • Learning and teaching
  • Enterprise
  • Research
  • Professional services

Dr Kalawsky is a champion for doctoral researcher wellbeing support. Her work in this important area aligns with the Building Excellence Strategy and the fourth priority of the People’s Strategy – workload, wellbeing and resilience.

Katryna’s doctoral wellbeing and support survey pioneered her development and refinement of the University’s first inaugural Institutional Doctoral Wellbeing Action Plan.

Professor Elizabeth Peel, Associate Pro Vice Chancellor (Doctoral College) said: “This impressive and timely action plan not only identifies strategic and operational goals for enhancing doctoral researcher support, but it also takes a focused and holistic approach to engaging staff on the front line providing support, such as supervisors, Directors of Doctoral Programmes, Research Administrators and Student Services colleagues.

“I am hugely pleased that Katryna has received this excellence award which directly supports the Doctoral College’s strategy of vitality, visibility and value.

The organisation of spotlight events that celebrate and promote equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) can also be added to the list of Katryna’s achievements.

The Inspiring Women at Loughborough, LGBT+ Research at Loughborough and BAME Research at Loughborough events were well attended and contributed to the visibility of EDI agendas at the University, as well as showcasing the excellent work of our researchers and academics.

On the achievement, Katryna said: “I am absolutely delighted - the award will enable me to fast track elements of the New Institutional Doctoral Wellbeing Action Plan, including new initiatives such as the Doctoral Wellbeing and Support Week in March 2020.”She is currently organising a new EDI showcase event Disability and Wellbeing Research at Loughborough, and would encourage those who specialise in this area to get in touch.
