Institute of Advanced Studies hosts US academic specialising in dynamics

Last week, the Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) welcomed Professor Ahmed Shabana from the University of Illinois (UIC) to Loughborough.

Professor Shabana is the Director of the Dynamic Simulation Laboratory at UIC in Chicago and was invited to the University as part of the IAS’s Motion Theme, which was organised and convened by Professor Stephanos Theodossiades from the School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering.

During his time at the University, Professor Shabana presented a lecture, held a seminar for early-career researchers and participated in a networking and collaboration workshop.

On 1 April, Professor Shabana presented the activities of his research group at UIC to academics and researchers at Loughborough and had discussions about the potential to collaborate in the future.

He also held a lecture titled Mathematical Description of Motion on Wednesday 3 April, focusing on the efficient computer simulations of large and complex physics and engineering systems.

Talking about his visit, Professor Theodossiades said: “We were delighted to have Professor Shabana, an internationally leading scientist in the area of computational dynamics, on campus.

“He gave three seminars related to his past and present research, attracting lots of interest from members of staff and postgraduate researchers. Areas for potential collaboration were identified and I understand that colleagues are planning to visit Professor Shabana’s Lab at the University of Illinois at Chicago during the next few months.”

Professor Ahmed Shabana’s research interests lie in the area of large-scale computations applied to dynamic systems. He is the author of several books focusing on dynamics, vibrations, and continuum mechanics.

Professor Shabana is also a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). In addition, he is the Founding Chair of the ASME Technical Committee on Multibody Systems and Nonlinear Dynamics.

The Motion Theme explores different concepts of motion in collaboration with high-profile international academics, extending beyond individual movement to encompassing forms of transportation, assisted living, personal comfort, life course changes, performance and precision engineering.
