About this event
Come along for an informal session with CarersUK, where they will explore how to better support colleagues with caring responsibilities. Whether you're a carer yourself, a line manager, or a supportive teammate, this session is for you.
Over 5 million people in the UK are balancing unpaid caring responsibilities alongside their jobs. That’s 1 in 7 workers caring for someone who is ill, elderly, disabled, or has additional caring needs. As our population ages, most of us will experience some form of caring role during our lives.
What does this mean for us at Loughborough? Research shows that without proper support, working carers are at greater risk of:
- Poor mental health
- Burnout
- Financial stress
In fact, those with significant caring responsibilities are 2 to 3 times more likely to experience poor health and over 70% of working carers report feeling isolated in the workplace. To address this, the Carer’s Leave Act has introduced new legal rights for carers in the workplace - marking a significant step forward in UK employment law.
CarersUK are coming along to speak more about what this means for us, how we can support the people we work with and where to go for support.
What to expect for line managers and allies:
- How to recognise carers in your team
- Understanding carers’ rights
- Managing teams with caring responsibilities
- Signposting to support services
For carers:
- Navigating support services and resources
- Where to go for financial advice
- Tips for balancing work and caring
- Looking after your own well-being
This session is hosted by the Working Parents & Carers Staff Network as part of Carers Week. If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to get in touch with the Events Team by emailing events@lboro.ac.uk
