Vibrant and Inclusive Communities research network event - 'Legacies of insecurity'

This half-day sandpit event aims to bring together researchers working on the legacy and long-term impact of events massively affecting human security, such as armed conflicts, genocides and natural disasters.

It is sponsored by the Vibrant and Inclusive Communities (VIC) theme and co-organised by Giulia Piccolino (Centre for Security Studies and International Relations, Politics and History department), Tatevik Mnatsakanyan (Loughborough London) and Aya Jazaierly (School of Architecture).

The theme chosen fits within the VIC ‘Past & Future’ research area, in particular by advancing the understanding of how negative historical experiences can inform the creation of inclusive futures. Examples from our own research include how countries emerge from armed conflict as authoritarian or democratic states; how the experience of civil war impacts architectural design; and the long-term consequences of genocide denial and of the ‘war on terror’.

This is primarily intended as an in-person event, but there will be the option to attend online for those who cannot make it to campus. Lunch will be served to those attending in person.

The event is meant to be a genuinely interdisciplinary one. Staff and research students from different Schools and from both the London and Loughborough campuses are welcome.
