This year, the University Library is celebrating the National Year of Reading by offering students, staff, and visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the world of literature with new ways to explore stories, discover authors, and find books they’ll love.

The National Year of Reading 2026 is a UK-wide campaign designed to help more people rediscover the joy of reading.

As part of its involvement, the Library will host a series of curated displays and events designed to engage our community and promote a lifelong love of reading.

The displays will highlight a diverse range of books, from contemporary fiction and classic literature to research-focused works and emerging voices from the Library’s ever-growing leisure collection. Whether you’re returning to reading or already a dedicated book lover, you’ll find something to inspire your next read.

The campaign encourages everyone to take part, pick up a new book, join a discussion, or explore stories in digital formats through platforms like Libby. The Library’s events and displays offer an accessible and welcoming way for students and staff to celebrate reading.

Matt Cunningham, Library Experience and Environments Lead, said: “We’ve seen fantastic engagement from the events so far, with lots of suggestions for books on our Feel Good Reads Tree in January, and our Reading Party was so popular that we have been asked to hold another one later in the year.

“In December, we gave out over 500 books to our users in our annual Jólabókaflóð (Icelandic Christmas book flood) giveaway, so we are aiming to do even more this year! We have also ordered 150 books for our leisure reading and Libby collections from suggestions students have made, so keep them coming in our future displays.”
