Students from Towers Hall recently came together for a 24-hour bike ride challenge, raising more than £1,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust.

Organised by the Towers Hall Committee, the event was hosted in the Towers Common Room, where participants took turns cycling on static bikes to keep the challenge going continuously for a full day.

The initiative was designed not only to support a charitable cause but also to promote engagement with LSU Rag and foster a sense of unity within the hall. The result was a resounding success, with students from Towers joined by participants from other halls, as well as members of the LSU Executive team. The Towers Hall Warden and Catering team also came along to encourage riders.

Originally aiming to raise £300, the group exceeded expectations, collecting over three times their target. The chosen charity, Teenage Cancer Trust, was selected by the committee as a meaningful cause supporting young people facing cancer.

Carlo Ravano, one of the student organisers, reflected on the impact of the event: “The challenge was meant to foster hall spirit and participation, and it did just that. When it came to riding the bike, you definitely felt like you were contributing towards the greater good, and it was amazing to see such a positive reception from everyone who participated. Whether it was cycling or supervising, everyone involved deserves a massive shout-out. We will definitely look to do something similar in the near future."

In recognition of its success, the event was awarded New Event of the Year at the 2026 Hall Committee Awards.

Daisy Tipping, Towers Hall Warden, also praised the initiative: “I am immensely proud of Towers’ Hall Committee for creating and delivering such an inspiring 24-hour bike challenge in support of Teenage Cancer Trust. To surpass an original target of £300 and raise over £1,000 is truly remarkable.

“The Committee’s meticulous planning ensured the welfare and morale of everyone involved throughout the event, and the wonderful sense of community it fostered, bringing together both residents and non-residents, was clear to see. Winning a Hall Committee Award is thoroughly deserved, and I have no doubt this fantastic initiative will become a cherished new tradition for our Hall.”
