Safe and considerate campus road use - day and night

The University actively supports safe and healthy journeys by ensuring our busy campus road network is safe for staff, students and visitors.

Whether you drive a car on our campus or use an active mode of transport such as walking or cycling, it is crucial that all road users are considerate to one another.

We’ve compiled some tips below to help our University community stay safe on campus and on the surrounding roads.

Driving

  • Our campus speed limit is 15mph (and 5mph in areas such as the Student Village and Claudia Parsons Hall) – please remember these are limits, not a target
  • Wait until it is safe to overtake and leave at least 1.5 metres of space when passing cyclists and pedestrians
  • Stop at ‘Stop’ signs and give way to pedestrians at crossings
  • Wait at wider points in the road for larger vehicles to pass

Drivers are also encouraged to consider the following:

  • Think: Consider our campus users and ensure you move safely and appropriately. With darker mornings and evenings, it’s vital your lights are fully operational and your windscreens are clear. Be sure to stay alert with your speed, any distractions, the maintenance of your vehicle, how tired you are and your environmental impact.
  • Watch: Check your speed and stopping distance; slowing down gives you more time to act. Look out for walkers, runners and cyclists, and always drive at speeds appropriate to the road conditions.
  • Move: Think about how you move safely onto, around and away from our campus.
  • Report: let us know about anything which may be of concern to you so we can continuously improve our roads: You can email hse@lboro.ac.uk or fmhelp@lboro.ac.uk.

Walking, running and cycling

  • Wear light-coloured or fluorescent clothing to help other road users see you in daylight and poor light. Wearing reflective clothing and/or accessories (belt, hi-vis tabard, arm or ankle bands) at night time increases your visibility to other campus users
  • At night, cyclists must have white front and red rear lights lit. The bicycle must also be fitted with a red rear reflector. Please note bike lights and bike locks can be purchased at cost price from the Online Store
  • Pedestrians and runners should try to avoid being in the road and use designated pathways and crossing points
  • Cyclists should give way to pedestrians at crossings and adhere to our one-way routes
