The final week of June sees the last programme of activity for the IAS Annual Theme: Breathe.

Starting on Tuesday 27 June, there will be a range of exciting events taking place at International House and across the East Midlands campus, bringing together a range of international Visiting Fellows, artists, and Loughborough academics.

Subjects covered will be wide ranging: from air quality and the physiology of breathing, to smell and multi-sensory approaches to English Literature. The IAS will also be collaborating with the University’s new Artist in Residence with Fruit Routes, Mita Solanky, and the Route’s founding artist, Anne-Marie Culhane, for some live participatory performances exploring collective breathing and nature.

Breathe, the IAS Annual Theme for 2022-3, has been led by Sam Winter (SSEHS)Diganta Das (AACME)Joan Fitzpatrick (SSH) and Liam Heaney (SSEHS). Over the course of the year, the Theme has explored the scientific, historical, cultural, sociological, and ethical dimensions of what it means to breathe, and what this tells us about the world in which we live. International researchers from many fields and disciplines have come to Loughborough’s two campuses as IAS Visiting Fellows for the Theme. Together with Loughborough colleagues, they have explored issues ranging from the impact of the Covid pandemic, climate change and poor air quality on health, social justice and equity, to the significance of breath to speech, song, communication, design, creativity and life itself.

Events are open to all and the final programme is as follows:
