Loughborough academics receive prestigious awards from the Royal Geographical Society

Two academics from Loughborough University’s School of Social Sciences and Humanities, Dr Helena Pimlott-Wilson and Dr James Esson, have received awards from the Royal Geographical Society in their latest list of honours for their contributions to the field.

The Royal Geographical Society supports and recognises geographers from across the globe.

Dr Pimlott-Wilson, Reader in Geography, was awarded the Gill Memorial Prize for her work which spans social and economic geography. Her most recent research focuses on alternative and supplementary education, particularly the growth of Forest Schools and private tuition.

She commented: “I am delighted to have been selected to receive the Gill Memorial Award and am honoured to have my work recognised in this way by the Royal Geographical Society.

“I would like to express my appreciation to mentors and colleagues who have supported me throughout my career, and to family and friends for their encouragement. I am indebted to the countless schools, charities and youth organisations who have facilitated my work and to the children, young people, parents, carers and educators who have been involved with my research.”

Dr Esson, Senior Lecturer in Human Geography, received the Taylor and Francis Award for his work on geographies of race and racism in higher education.

He said: “I truly appreciate this recognition from the Royal Geographical Society. Special thanks go to my family, friends and colleagues because this award is the result of their efforts as much as mine.

“I look forward to continuing work with the RGS-IBG’s RACE Research Group to develop anti-racist initiatives that improve the representation, progression, and experiences of Black and minority ethnic students, academics and practitioners within the discipline.”
