LU Arts showcase students’ work celebrating inspirational women

In partnership with Loughborough Women’s Network, LU Arts asked students from the Loughborough Family last month to identify a woman that has inspired them in their lives, either personally or through their achievements.

They were asked to do this in a creative and innovative way prior to International Women’s Day, using art forms such as illustrations, poetry, scripts or creative writing.

Three distinct categories have been identified as a result of the women students chose to focus on: personal relationships (e.g. family or through work), political figures (those who have shaped the world we live in), and individuals from popular culture who have entertained or inspired us through their skills and talent.

From mums and academics, to actresses, fashion designers and World War 2 radio operators, the collection is diverse, heart-warming and inspiring. They can be viewed online here. Some of the illustration work will also be displayed around campus on bus shelters and noticeboards in common areas.

In addition to their work being showcased on the dedicated website, students have also been awarded cash prizes and will see their pieces on display at the International Women’s Festival on Thursday 12 March, which takes place in Room 1 of the Students’ Union from 1pm-4pm and is free to attend. The first hour of the event will also include performances of the written work produced as part of this project, with poetry readings and an extract from one of the plays. Students and staff are encouraged to bring their lunch along and enjoy the variety of work on display.

Speaking about the Festival, Chair of Loughborough Women’s Network Chloe Morgan commented: “Loughborough Women’s Network works to both educate people about women’s struggles and celebrate their achievements, and this festival does exactly that by informing people of the obstacles women face whilst also celebrating their successes despite these struggles.”

More information about the student events taking place this week in relation to International Women’s Day can be viewed online.

A series of events aimed at staff members are also taking place this week, and a website has been created for 2020 which promotes research by women academics and researchers at Loughborough as well as profiles highlighting the work and achievements of brilliant women from across the University.
