IAS to host academic community engagement event on Sound theme

On Tuesday 21May, the Institute of Advanced Studies will be hosting an academic community engagement event on its Sound theme at International House between 12pm-2pm.

Academics whose research engages with sound or who are interested in sound as a future research area are invited to attend the drop-in session.

The Sound team will discuss planned activities and colleagues will be able to learn more about how to become involved with the theme.

The current areas of focus for the theme include:

Engineering research into sound: Structural dynamics and acoustics, ultrasonic characterisation of materials, sound quality evaluation of impulsive sounds, impact dynamics and acoustics, underwater acoustics, bioacoustics, noise and vibration measurement, noise and vibration related to users’ perception of impact sports equipment, and ultrasound imaging for medical application.

Sound in the arts: Environmental aesthetics and bodily experience, the perpetual cycle of translation between words and speech, speech and the visual, visual and auditory, auditory and words, sounds of animal behaviour, synaesthesia, and sound healing.

Design and social science sound research: Soundscape studies, navigation perception influenced by sound, users’ auditable experience in electrical vehicles, multi-modality design utilising hearing and other senses, and sociology of mobile music and listening technologies.
