Student wins prestigious engineering scholarship

A Loughborough University student has been awarded a prestigious scholarship which recognises talented engineers.

Ewan Atkinson, a BEng Product Design Engineering student, has received the Diamond Jubilee Scholarship from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

The IET Diamond Jubilee Scholarship scheme provides long-term financial support to engineering students in the UK.

Winners also benefit from mentoring and work experience placements through the IET’s extensive networks.

Ewan Atkinson said: “The scholarship will assist me by providing access to resources, opportunities in networking and placements. It also gives me the ability to work and meet like-minded people which will enable me to learn and build up my experience.

“In addition, I would like to use the scholarship funds for educational materials, such as books or computer software, as well as experience days and exhibitions as the opportunities arise.”

Mike Carr, President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology said: “In a world where engineering and technology is moving faster than ever before, we need to work to remove unnecessary barriers that might be discouraging more young people from becoming engineers.

"In other words, we need to be more inclusive about inspiring and recruiting the next generation of engineers.

“We are really pleased to give financial help to the 65 young people as a result of our prestigious Diamond Jubilee Scholarship. We hope that they will go on to become the leaders of tomorrow in an industry which offers a diverse range of exciting opportunities and challenges.”

Each scholarship winner is provided with at least £1,000 per academic year.

The investment is being made in collaboration with the Belling Charitable Settlement, the David Family Foundation, The Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, Siemens, BT and Thales.
