Sustainability team celebrates bronze rating and highlights from 2017/18

The University’s Sustainability team is pleased to announce they have received a bronze rating from the Sustainability Leadership Scorecard (SLS) initiative, a tool created by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC).

The initiative is based on 18 frameworks that review sustainability themes, enabling higher education institutions to identify progress and compare themselves against others in the sector.

Loughborough’s involvement in the SLS allows the opportunity for dialogue and engagement with colleagues from across the University around the topic of sustainability and what they can do to promote it, as well as providing high-level strategic reporting and identifying key areas of focus.

The tool identified the University is particularly sustainable in two of the four priority areas: Leadership and Governance (eg staff engagement, health and wellbeing) and Estates and Operations (eg travel and transport, biodiversity and sustainable construction), both of which were awarded a silver rating.

The team’s work on the SLS project has also been referenced within their 2017/18 Sustainability Annual Report.

If you haven’t read the report already, some of the highlights mentioned within it include:

  • 75% of waste on campus was recycled
  • 500,000 fewer disposable cups and takeaway boxes were used compared to previous years, thanks to initiatives such as the rCup and the Eco-Friendly Box
  • Over £44,000 was raised for charity, with 3,156 bags donated to the British Heart Foundation
  • Received Green Flag accreditation
  • Campus bees produced 200lbs of Loughborough Gold Honey
  • All green waste was composted onsite
