Innovative projects reach finals of engineer awards

A number of projects at Loughborough University have reached the finals of Collaborate to Innovate, a highly prestigious awards competition organised by The Engineer.

The awards represent the UK’s best engineering innovations in collaboration with industry. Three Loughborough-led projects have been shortlisted.

In the ‘academic innovator’ category is the University’s Centre for Collaborative and Innovative Construction Engineering (CICE) at the School of Architecture, Civil and Building Engineering. The award submission relates to the centre’s collaboration with over 100 industrial partners.

Loughborough’s Optical Engineering Research Group at the School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering is shortlisted in the ‘transportation’ category for emissions technology for cleaner diesel engines, working with Caterpillar, The Energy Technologies Institute and Johnson Matthey.

Also in the ‘transportation’ category is the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Combustion System Aerothermal Processes, a partnership between Loughborough University’s School of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering and Rolls-Royce, based at the Science and Enterprise Park (LUSEP).

The University is also nominated for two awards as a project partner. In the ‘academic innovator’ category, the School of Mechanical, Electrical, and Manufacturing Engineering is working with the Centre for Additive Manufacturing at the University of Nottingham alongside a wide range of industry and academic partners.

In the ‘energy, efficiency and sustainability’ category, Loughborough’s Centre for Sustainable Manufacturing and Recycling Technology (SMART) is nominated as part of the Self-Optimising Clean-In Place (SOCIP) project at Martec of Whitwell Ltd alongside the University of Nottingham, Greencore and Synatel.

The entries are currently being assessed by a panel of industry judges. Winners will be announced at a ceremony in September before presenting their projects to stakeholders at a one-day conference in December.
