Recognising Diverse Research Outputs in REF: A Hidden REF Workshop

Did you know that more than 20 different types of research output are eligible for submission to the REF? Yet, in REF 2021, fewer than 3% of submitted outputs were anything other than "traditional" publications such as books, book chapters, conference papers, and journal articles.

We think this means that many high-quality research outputs, such as software, databases, exhibitions, performances and policy contributions, are being overlooked. Yet REF guidance is also clear in its expectation that a diverse range of outputs are fairly considered and submitted.

To help address this as part of the University's REF 2029 preparations, we are hosting a workshop with the Hidden REF team on recognising diverse research outputs in REF.

The session will include practical exercises assessing example outputs against the REF criteria of originality, significance and rigour, alongside discussion of assessment practice, research culture, and the recognition of excellent research regardless of format.

As REF preparations gather pace, we are hoping this will be an opportunity to build confidence in assessing research outputs in all forms and may also be valuable for those whose own research generates diverse outputs.
