Food waste collections to start for most students living off-campus

Students living off campus in Loughborough can start recycling food waste from next week as Charnwood Borough Council rolls out a new weekly collection service.

It means food waste will be collected separately from other waste and recycling from the week beginning Monday 2 November 2026.

Most properties have been supplied with two caddies – one for indoor use and one for outdoor use. Liners have also been provided to use in the indoor caddy. The Council will supply caddy liners every six months.

Students can begin using their indoor caddy straight away and transfer food waste into the outdoor caddy ready for collection.

Items including fruit and vegetable peelings, meat, fish, bones, dairy products, bread, pasta and tea bags can all be recycled.

The outdoor caddies should be presented on the same day as the green or black bins collection day every week.

Students are also reminded to remove bins from the street and return them to their property after they have been emptied. In some areas of Loughborough, households may be fined if bins are not taken off the street within the collection window (which can be seen on the street signs).

Those living in flats with a shared bin store may not yet have received a food waste caddy pack. This is because properties that share a bin store, such as blocks of flats, will join the service next year.

Weekly food waste collections are being introduced to meet the Government’s Simpler Recycling rules, which require all councils in England to collect food waste separately.

The changes aim to reduce the amount of waste in black bins and cut carbon emissions.

The collected food waste will be taken to an anaerobic digestion facility where it is used to generate a renewable form of energy called biogas. The process also produces nutrient-rich fertiliser for farms.

More information about food waste recycling can be found on the Charnwood Borough Council website.
