Songwriting short course

Someone playing a piano

Learn the fundamentals of songwriting in this beginner-friendly six week course for staff and students.

The course will introduce and build on the fundamentals of songwriting so you develop the skills to write and finish your own songs. Topics covered will include generating ideas using rhythm, chord sequences, avoiding writer’s block, writing compelling lyrics, and arrangement. There will be structured activities each week to help you learn new techniques and put them into practice as well as group work and sharing ideas and feedback.

The course is open to all ability levels. If you play an instrument, you are welcome to bring this along with you. The music rooms, which are equipped with pianos, are nearby and will be used as breakout spaces during the course.

Your tutor will be Ian Crabtree, an experienced guitar and bass tutor. He has a Grade 8 in Classical Guitar and a BA in Jazz Studies from Leeds College of Music and is also a fully qualified teacher. He is a very experienced live performer, session musician and has written songs with The Voice finalist Sally Barker, BBC Introducing Ben Francis, a Eurovision Song Contest writing team and works for a number of publishers writing music for TV and media placements.
