Introducing SafeZone: A free safety app for staff and students

We are pleased to announce that Loughborough University will be introducing SafeZone, a personal safety and security solution designed to support staff and students across our campus and working environments.

SafeZone is a mass communication solution direct to email, together with a mobile-based platform that helps protect individuals by connecting them directly with our security and response teams whenever assistance is needed.

Over the summer period, we will begin engaging with staff to support the rollout of the system, with a view to full adoption ahead of the new academic year. This will ensure the platform is fully established and ready for launch to students as part of the arrivals process.

How SafeZone will support staff

SafeZone provides a range of features designed to enhance safety, communication, and overall wellbeing, including:

  • Quick access to help: Raise emergency, first aid, or assistance alerts directly from your phone, instantly sharing your location with responders.
  • Lone working support: Use the check-in and timer features to share your location and status when working alone or in higher-risk environments.
  • Mass communication: Receive important alerts and instructions directly to your email and/or device (if you download the app) during incidents or a critical situation.
  • Real-time response coordination: Enables security teams to respond quickly and effectively using live information and communication tools.

Benefits for the University

Implementing SafeZone will bring significant benefits, including:

  • Enhanced personal safety and reassurance for staff across campus and when working remotely.
  • Faster emergency response times, with precise location-sharing and direct communication.
  • Stronger campus-wide communication, ensuring timely and targeted updates during incidents.
  • Improved support for lone workers and higher-risk roles.
  • A unified safety platform that strengthens our duty of care and helps mitigate risks across the institution.
  • A greater sense of community and wellbeing, knowing that help is always easily accessible.

SafeZone is already widely used across UK universities and organisations globally, helping to improve safety, wellbeing, and incident response outcomes for staff and students alike.

Next steps

Over the coming weeks, we will begin introducing SafeZone to staff, including guidance on downloading and using the app. Further details and launch timelines will be shared shortly.

We encourage you to take part in this important initiative and help us build a safer, more connected campus community.
