WARPit is an online portal and reuse network allowing for resource sharing on campus. Think eBay or Vinted, but for universities. The portal is a great way to repurpose items you no longer require, as well as reducing the need to buy brand new. This supports the University’s strategy of ‘Creating Better Futures. Together’, specifically the strategic theme of Climate Change and Net Zero.
WARPit helps the University spend less on procurement and waste disposal by allowing staff to share resources rather than purchasing new. It also helps us find new owners for items that otherwise would have ended up as waste. The range of items that can be uploaded varies massively from desks and cupboards through to stationery and office decorations, even lab equipment!
Not only does it allow resource sharing within the University, but it also allows for resource sharing with local schools, charities and clubs. We encourage all staff to share WARPit with any familiar local schools or charities.
All staff members can create an account with WARPit by simply registering online.
Once signed up, you can browse the portal to see what items are on offer. Simply claim the item and arrange its collection either through your own department or Domestic Services. Uploading items is just as easy, and once an item has been claimed, WARPit quantifies the carbon, waste and financial savings.
The University has a legal obligation to apply the waste hierarchy, with prevention and reuse being the preferred waste management option. WARPit supports the University in applying this legislation by offering a solution to reduce the amount we buy and the amount we waste.
Over the next month, the Sustainability team will be giving away two jars of our Loughborough Gold Honey on WARPit. To be in for a chance to win, simply upload an item to WARPit between 6 February and 6 March. Winners will be selected at random.
