Disposable and charcoal BBQs
The use of all disposable and charcoal BBQs is temporarily prohibited. These BBQs can produce hot ash, sparks and embers capable of igniting dry vegetation and starting a fire that may spread rapidly.
Gas BBQs (only to be used by the University Catering team)
Gas BBQs may only be used where:
- they are positioned on level, non-combustible hardstanding;
- they are well away from dry grass, trees, hedges, buildings and other combustible materials;
- a named, competent person supervises the BBQ continuously;
- gas cylinders, hoses and connections have been checked and are in good condition;
- a hose or substantial water supply is immediately available for surrounding vegetation, alongside suitable firefighting equipment;
- the BBQ can be shut down immediately if conditions become unsafe.
Gas BBQs must not be placed or used directly on sports pitches, lawns or other grassed areas. If these controls cannot be met, the BBQ must not go ahead.
Cigarettes and smoking
Cigarettes are a common cause of grass and vegetation fires. Anyone smoking outdoors must:
- only smoke in designated areas, preferably on hardstanding and away from dry vegetation;
- fully extinguish cigarettes in a suitable cigarette bin or ashtray;
- never discard cigarettes, matches or smoking materials on the ground, into vegetation or from a vehicle;
- never place a cigarette in a general waste bin unless it has been completely extinguished.
Please remain vigilant and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately by calling 999 and University Security on the appropriate emergency number.
These restrictions will remain in place until conditions improve and a further notice is issued.
