At Loughborough, every role is carefully evaluated and assigned a grade between 1 and 9. This grading system ensures fairness and consistency across the University and reflects the skill, responsibility and complexity associated with each position.
Staff working in roles graded 1 to 8 typically start at the lowest point of their pay scale, progressing one point each year until reaching the top of the main pay scale for the grade, recognising your growth in the role, continued contribution and commitment.
Each year, the University reviews pay through an annual reward process, which can include accelerated progression and advancement into the excellence range of the pay scale for those delivering exceptional performance. Changes are usually based on recommendations from School or Service Senior Review Groups chaired by Deans and Directors.
Roles at Grade 9 operate slightly differently. These senior positions are paid on spot salaries, meaning they do not follow incremental pay points within a scale. Instead, salaries are individually reviewed through the Senior Salary Review process chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, which takes place each year as part of the annual reward process. As part of this review, salaries are benchmarked against similar roles across other universities, within schools, and the wider professional services sector, taking into account the scope of responsibility, job function, specialist areas and, importantly, performance and equity issues. Input is sought from Deans, and where relevant, the Provost, Pro Vice-Chancellors, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer for this process.
Additionally, the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) negotiates annually with five trade unions (UCU, UNISON, Unite, EIS and GMB) to determine a national Annual Pay Award. This applies to all staff automatically (except the Vice-Chancellor and his direct reports) and helps maintain a competitive and fair pay structure nationwide.
These processes reflect our shared commitment to recognising your work, supporting career growth, and ensuring that Loughborough remains a rewarding place to build your future.
