Loughborough Wellbeing Centre displays winning mural design

The new mural design displayed on the windows of the Loughborough Wellbeing Centre.

At the start of the year, the Community Warden team, in conjunction with LU Arts and Student Services, ran an arts competition for students to design a window mural for the front of the Wellbeing Centre. The artwork’s aim was to promote the Wellbeing Centre’s work and celebrate the partnership between the centre and the University community.

Yurou Zhang, a PhD student in the School of Design and Creative Arts, won the competition. Yurou is an international student from Nanjing, China, studying her BA and MA in Fine Art at the China Academy of Art. Her research focuses on internet memes, international students’ cultural adaptation and identity negotiation. Yurou also received a £450 cash prize for winning the competition.

Yurou said: “Seeing my mural design come to life at the Wellbeing Centre is truly rewarding. My intention was to create an image that conveys warmth, hope and inclusivity, offering a sense of comfort to those who pass by. The Centre provides a sense of welcome and belonging for international students and the wider community, which makes it especially meaningful for me to contribute through art.

“As an international student from China, my research and artistic practice often explore themes of cultural identity and adaptation, so this project has been a meaningful way for me to connect my personal journey with the wider Loughborough community. I’m very grateful for all the support that made this possible and delighted to hear that the work has been received so positively.”

The Wellbeing Centre provides a safe and supportive environment and runs a range of activities to support people's mental health in Charnwood and beyond. Loughborough University is committed to improving and protecting the wellbeing of the community and is partnering with the Wellbeing Centre to help showcase their work.

Helen Carter, CEO of the Wellbeing Centre, said: “We are thrilled to unveil the vibrant new window display at Loughborough Wellbeing Centre, which has transformed our space with a bright, modern, and uplifting mural. Designed by the talented Yurou Zhang, the artwork beautifully captures the warmth, hope, and welcome that our Mental Health Charity offers to those navigating mental health challenges.

“The response from visitors, staff, and volunteers has been overwhelmingly positive, with many sharing how the display reflects the inclusive and supportive environment we strive to create every day. This inspiring project was made possible through our valued partnership with Loughborough University, and we are proud to collaborate with them in bringing creativity and community spirit to life in such a meaningful way.”

Yurou’s artwork was produced and installed by Event Engineering, a company founded by Loughborough University alumnus, Mark Thornton.
