Whilst the clocks going back brings brighter mornings, it also means earlier sunsets which will impact travel, outdoor activity and campus routines. With reduced visibility in the evenings, the University encourages all staff and students to take extra care when travelling around campus. Wearing reflective clothing or accessories is strongly advised, particularly for those walking, running or cycling. Cyclists should ensure their bikes are equipped with working front and rear lights, and pedestrians are encouraged to carry a torch when navigating poorly lit areas. Choosing well-lit and populated routes, travelling with friends or course mates, and staying alert by avoiding distractions such as headphones or mobile phones can all contribute to safer journeys.
As part of our commitment to safety, the University is also asking all running groups to be especially mindful of visibility during evening runs. Last year, several near-miss incidents were reported involving runners and vehicles around campus. To help prevent further incidents, we urge everyone to follow the ‘Be bright, be seen’ guidance. Neon and reflective gear are highly recommended to ensure visibility. For further advice on running safely at night, the following resources offer helpful tips:

Whatever your reason for being out after dark, safety remains a top priority. Please take the necessary steps to stay visible and safe.
