Students join forces with Falcon Centre to support sustainability and community

As part of Sustainability Week, Loughborough students recently visited the Falcon Centre, a local charity dedicated to providing shelter and support for those in need.

The Falcon Centre is a key partner in our Give and Go campaign, which helps repurpose unwanted items and give them a new lease of life.

The charity has recently secured funding from Leicestershire County Council’s ‘Get Ready Community Energy Fund’, aimed at improving energy efficiency within their properties and increasing awareness among staff and service users. This initiative is particularly valuable for residents preparing to move into their own homes, where managing energy use and finances can be a real challenge.

As part of this fund, the charity had an idea to create draft excluders from recycled fabrics and surplus duvets donated by students. For individuals moving into their first home, these items are often overlooked but can make a big difference in keeping homes warm during winter.

To support this effort, students joined Falcon Centre residents in a hands-on workshop to craft these sustainable draft excluders. The session not only helped reduce waste but also gave students the chance to connect with the local community and contribute to a meaningful cause.

If you’d like to get involved, the Sustainability team are running another craft workshop on 17 December, 1.30pm–4pm at the Falcon Centre. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a positive impact before Christmas, supporting sustainability and helping those in need. Email Megan Ward to sign up.
