Four Loughborough University Technicians shortlisted for prestigious Papin Prize

Four Loughborough University technicians - three individuals and one team - have been shortlisted for an acclaimed Papin Prize, which recognises outstanding technical excellence and innovation in higher education and research.

The Papin Prizes are the only awards dedicated to celebrating the very best technical staff and teams in academia and research. These national awards recognise and honour the work of technicians in higher education and research.

Julie Turner, Strategic Scientific Technical Lead at Loughborough University said “It is wonderful news to have four shortlisted technicians/team for the Papin Prizes. This is the highest number of technicians shortlisted that Loughborough University has had so far. To me this demonstrates just how our technical colleagues are valued and recognised for their contribution to the University.”

Loughborough University shortlisted nominees include:

Dr Kathryn Maskew, a Technical Tutor in Biological Sciences, has been shortlisted in the Contribution to Teaching category. This award recognises a member of technical staff who has made a significant contribution to the student teaching and learning experience.

Eleanor Braithwaite, a Technical Officer in Biochemistry, has been shortlisted in the Excellence in Sustainability category. This category highlights those who actively engage in sustainable practices and work towards reducing environmental impact.

The Fashion and Textiles Technical Tutors have been shortlisted for the Technical Team category. This award celebrates teams that collaborate effectively to achieve a common goal, demonstrating resilience, adaptability, innovation, and expertise.

Finally, Pauline King, Senior Chemistry Technician/ Technical Tutor, has been shortlisted for The Professor Lord Bhattacharyya Lifetime Achievement Award. This award celebrates a member technical staff who has spent their working career repeatedly and continually striving to achieve the highest standards in their activity.

The shortlisted nominees will be reviewed by the Midlands Innovation Executive Management Group, comprising Pro-Vice-Chancellors from leading universities. Winners will be announced at the 2025 UK Higher Education Technicians Summit in July.
