Loughborough University partners with Carbon Jacked to run the first Climate Games

To celebrate Earth Week (22-28 April), Carbon Jacked have teamed up with the University’s Sport and Sustainability teams to engage students through a pilot programme including the first ever Loughborough Sport ‘Climate Games’.

The Sport and Sustainability Programme aims to educate students on sustainability in a creative way through sport. As part of the Climate Games, teams will compete to be the most sustainable and look at three areas of sustainability: Climate (reducing greenhouse gas emissions), Nature (improving biodiversity), and Waste (reducing the amount of rubbish they produce).

They’ll come up with ideas of how they could take action as a team across each area and be scored on these ideas by a panel of experts. They’ll be scored on two measures: how impactful their action would be from an environmental perspective, and how well they plan to communicate it to others. The competition will run for four weeks, with the winning team announced in the week commencing 13 May 2024.

For the pilot, the following Loughborough teams will be involved:

  • Women’s Football
  • Men’s Hockey
  • Sailing and Windsurfing
  • Lifesaving
  • Athletics
  • Mountaineering
  • Lightning Netball
  • Geography Sport

Members of the teams will all have the opportunity to access the Carbon Jacked online sustainability platform, measure their personal carbon footprint, receive tailored sustainability content and attend an exclusive careers talk with a sustainability expert.

These opportunities are also open to any students at the University, so if you want to get involved, email enquiries@carbonjacked.com from your University email account to receive more information and access to the platform.

By accessing the platform, students can:

  • Learn more about climate, nature and sustainability
  • View introductory courses that inspire students to try something new and enjoy nature, such as wild swimming
  • Discover how to protect the planet through volunteering and personal actions
  • Check out the University’s existing sustainability efforts
  • Keep an eye on the medal table for the Climate Games.

Carbon Jacked helps businesses, sports and individuals to creatively combat climate change, living by the motto that ‘saving the planet shouldn’t be boring’. They have worked with organisations including Sky Sports, Accenture, SailGP, and Forest Green Rovers.
