New opportunity for students to help create or feature in a new Virtual Reality artwork for campus

LU Arts is searching for students to get involved in Loughborough University’s first ever virtual reality collaborative project, organised with leading dance and technology organisation Displace Studio.

This opportunity is perfect for any student with an interest in learning about creative technology such as performing in the metaverse, games development, 3D capture and modelling, and creative immersive and XR (Extended Reality) experiences. Additionally, LU Arts is also looking for dancers, actors, and athletes to feature in the artwork itself – the performances later being added to a virtual world.

Any current students based at the Loughborough campus can get involved, including both undergraduate and postgraduate. The benefits of taking part include gaining practical experience in VR and collaborating with professional artists, as well as developing skills such as coding, 3D modelling, and motion graphics. This can boost your CV and improve your employability prospects.

Initial workshops will take place in February 2023, with further workshops and development of the artwork during the spring and summer terms. The final VR artwork will be launched on campus in June 2023. The opportunities to get involved are flexible, as LU Arts is able to work around exams and other commitments.

To get involved and find out more, register for the introductory event on 10 February to meet Ben and Kerryn from Displace Studios. Free pizza will be available from 12.30pm, with the event starting at 1pm with a short introduction to the project. Following this, you can go on a campus walk (weather permitting) scouting for different locations where the work could be hosted. Throughout the event you will be encouraged to discuss and share ideas for the VR artwork. You must register in advance as space is limited.

If you would like to get involved in this project but can't attend this event, please email luarts@lboro.ac.uk to register your interest. Please include details of your skills and experience and let us know which aspect of the project you are interested in: performing or developing the actual VR artwork.
