University community invited to vigil marking one year since the start of the Ukraine war

The University will be holding a vigil on campus this Friday (24 February) to commemorate one year since the war in Ukraine began.

The vigil is an opportunity to honour the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people, showing support for their struggle for freedom and independence, and to show solidarity with our Ukrainian staff and students in Loughborough. Together we call for peace and reject violence, and hope this will prevail.

It takes place from 1pm-2pm, starting at the Hazlerigg-Rutland Fountain with speeches from the University Chaplain Jan Sutton and the Vice-Chancellor Professor Nick Jennings.

Following a minute's silence, those in attendance will be invited to take part in a walk across the campus.

All staff, students and researchers are welcome to attend. Flags will be provided at the beginning of the vigil, although guests are welcome to bring their own flags and banners.

Donations for the Ukrainian Embassy’s Official Charitable Fund will also be collected. Throughout the day, the Chapel in the University Chaplaincy will also be open for those who would like to light a candle.
