International Women’s Day 2023

Maia and the Loughborough Women’s Network have put together a programme of events to celebrate International Women’s Day (8 March), centred around this year’s theme of #EmbraceEquity.

The week will kick off with a lunchtime plenary panel on 6 March featuring:

  • Kerrine Bryan – alumna, award winning engineer and author currently living in New York
  • Samantha Emery – alumna, Payments Industry & Development Director at Lloyds Banking Group
  • Dr Sarah Barnard – Senior Lecturer in Sociology of Contemporary Work
  • Yasamin Fozouni – alumna, working on a PHD in Computer Science currently living in Dallas, USA

On International Women’s Day itself there will be a march leaving from the Students' Union lawn at 1.30pm – all staff and students are welcome to attend.

There will also be plenty of creative sessions to get involved with, including a crochet workshop and banner making (led by LU Arts), and beginners’ classes in karate and pole fitness. If you are looking for activities to get involved with during the evening there will be a film screening of ‘Aftersun’, run in collaboration with Flix student cinema, and a pub quiz in the Students’ Union.

Izzy Romp, Women’s Officer said: “We can't wait for the activities to get started! Come and join us in celebrating International Women’s Day by supporting our campaign and learning about all thing's equity. This year will be one to remember!"

Abbie Coburn and Abby Davis, Maia Co-Chairs added: “This year’s theme of Embracing Equity is fundamental to the values and visions of the Maia community. We’re excited to be offering a range of events and opportunities for our members to mark, celebrate and share International Women’s Day. Get involved and #EmbraceEquity with us!”
