Earlier this year, LU Arts commissioned graphic artist Nadina Ali to create a new piece of public art for campus. To help inform her work, Nadina spoke to Black students and staff as well as running a special competition. The competition invited Black students and staff to respond to the theme of Black Joy (through words or visuals). Using these entries as inspiration, Nadina created a vibrant mural of graphic panels. The mural was first installed on the hoardings around Sir Arnold Hall in May and is currently located on the walkway between James France and Edward Herbert Building.
During the event, Nadina will discuss her artistic practice and how she uses her colourful graphic style to communicate important messages. Nadina has also invited Denise Coles, and Candis Boateng to join the panel and speak from their positions as Black staff and students working and studying at Loughborough.
Denise is an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Manager at the University. She works with the EDI team, leads and senior management to help implement the University’s strategic aims. A large part of her job is to promote a culture of EDI good practice, identify systemic barriers, and work collaboratively to address and eliminate structural barriers, processes, and practices that result in discriminatory outcomes for students and staff. Candis Boateng is a current Architecture student and the Black Joy competition winner.
On the day of the panel, light refreshments will be served (hot drinks and pastries) and you are welcome to bring lunch with you.
This event will take place on Wednesday 13 September from 12.30pm-1.30pm and a Teams link is available for those who are unable to attend in person. The event is free, but booking is required.
